SINGLE-HANDED ATTACK ON A
RAILWAY

London, October '8. The Admiralty states that -a commander of a submarine in the Sea, of Marmora has reported - that Lieutenant D'O.vly Hughes volunteered to attack ft railway. He dropped into the water and pushed a ,raft, carrying a demolition charge, and weapons, to the shore. He climbed a cliff and blow up tbe line 150 yards away from whero three men were seated beside the railway. Though ho muffled the fuse th<3 moil were aroused and followed him, arid shots were .dxchnnged. '•
Finding it impossible t<> return by the place he ascended, tho lieutenant went further east and l placed'a'.charge on tho railway. This exploded as ha entered the water, and fragments fell between a quarter and half a mile away. He swam out to sea and blew, his whistle, but was not heard, as his boat "was behind the cliffs. .
After resting : on: the rocks; ho swam' at daybreak round the..last point. His whistle was then heard, and simultaneously- came shouts from the cliffs Overhead, and rifle fire'opened oil the boat. Finally he was picked] up extremely exhausted.: after swimming a mile in his clothes. ;
