Maksra County Councilheld yesterday. A deputation of Makara . residents waited on the. council with the request ■ '■ that people resident in the Makara Riding of the; county should be; exempt ' from : the special rate proposed to bo levied-for the-payment of. the county's • share of the cost of the Hutt Road on. tlio grounds that they weroi already .pay-', ing a subsidy, to the Karori Borough . ; Council. They 'were'prepared-to -ad-.v 'nut ;that" ihe Ponriia Riding' -was being ~ v badly treated in;havin4'!t'o,pay 'for 'the : Hutt Road, -but - two; wrongs did not;■';• make a right-.' The people of the Mira-; ■ mar Borough made , more use of the Hutt Road than tho residents- of Makara, ■ ' who;. never ; used if at all, and had :: no connection with it in any way.- .'. . - The chairman said;-that',The fact off- , ; the matter' was that'.the bounty had been. saddled with the part .payment for ; : a better road than they .wanted, and ;; they had to pay for it; ■; -It' was decided.to: inform the deputation that' the council could tako no action in the mat- ' ter. : .' . ■-. y ■ ■ - ; ■■ The council's ranger wrote a letter' . requesting .-'permission' to: .withdraw -.hisy .. . resignation. The City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) wrote,that.. consequent upon the' * r widening of the road in Ngaliauranga Gorge and the depositing of filling oyer ; xlio drain from the municipal abattoirs, : tho drain had -been broken ■ in two places..
