An advertisement in this issue calls the attention of owners to tbe closing of all acceptances for the Maisterton .Racing Club's Spring Meeting- at 10 p.m. tonight. Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting close on Monday next at 1) p.m. Judging by the requests he is daily receiving to reserve accommodation, Secretary A .E. Whyte anticipates a record entry. The Hawke[s Bay Hunt Chub will hold its first totalisator meeting on the Hastings courso to-day. The Maiden race irijl see several of the Hastings Stakes candidates- in action. General entries for the C.I.C. Spring Meeting close' to-niglit. At Hastings Naupata is engaged in the Hack Hurdles with top-*eight, lOst. 131b, The Mahaki gelding has done most of his racing over steeplechase bourses, but ho jumps hurdles well, and with his pace ho should be able to hold his own in tho liold he will meet to-day.
Like another of the St. Alwyhne, progeny in Lady <3ledailist, the Australian periornier, St. Canvynno, seems to improve with age, and this season ho promises to be at the tox> of the weight-, tor-age tree. Already he has or-editod hig owner with two good stakes, and divided another with Reputation, and it'he keeps right several more appear likely to fall to his bid at Flemington. ■ ~.
If-the going is heavy at Winjatui today, Warstep is likely to be a non-starter, and ill her absence Slogan, a good horse In soft i going,- will . be' fancied' in.- the Mosgiel Handicap. In 'the Spring ■ Hurdles Silver Shield, who is to bfl riddein by L. tiegarty,- will be the opposition to Moddite and Crib. Recorder, who is to fcavo the' services of C. Emerson,, should do better in the Electric Handicap than 6he did .ut Ashburto'n, where an apprentice held 5 Ihe reins. The biggest field of the day is engaged in the Taioma Handicap, "and eight of the twenty-three horses carded are in at the minimum. 'Amongst them is Sister Regis, the full-sister to Sister Radius. So lar the southern-owiujd mare, nas not done much in public, bufc in private she gallops well, and may do better to-day. Hap Dha, Sst. 71b., who is now located permanently at Wmgatui, will be much sought after in the October Welter Handicap, but the chestnut does not; seem to hav® any the best of matters : with' Snapdragon, who is only asked to cotacede him Gib. . The Chokebore mare ii not too reliable, but if sho races upi to her .best form the others will know all about it before the post is reached.
Reports 1 from Hawke's Bay credit S. Waddell with having, in' Hymenaiitis,: a particularly brilliant two-year-oitd in preparation for carrying the Hon, J. D. Urmond's colours this season. As will be readily guessed from, liis name, the colt is by the Cyllene horse Hymettus, wihile Ills dam is the imported mare Florigpld, by Florizel II (brother to Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee), from Gold' paste, who traces back to tho great English brood mare Queen Mary.
As ho was not started on Monday or Wednesday, Wallace Isinglass is probably being reserved for the Grantham Stakes, nine furlongs, for three-year-olds who have not won ,£IOOO since July 31. The chcstnut will be well supported if lie fa/ien the starter.
W is said that a prominent Canterbury sportsman is negotiating >vith L. Hewitt to get him to come and rido for him at the C.J.C. Cup meeting.
The southern sportsman, Mr. R. C. ; Gillies, owner of Bellshire, is at present on a business visit to Wellington. In addition to Bellshire, Mr. Gillies has a colt by Rokeby from the samo dam that is highly spoken of.
Now Zealand Cup candidates are engaged at Hastings to-day, amongst, tho . field being Multiply, Indigo, and' Blackall. The last-named should do better than at Napier last week, though probably , •he is still in want of a race or two before, ho will be at' his best. Indigo, on the': other hand, cdmcs quickly, and at Dannevirko last year ho won over ten furlongs at his. first, outing. As Flying Start did not accompany the Chokebore team to Wingatui, and Adjutant has an engagement in the Mosgiel \ Handicap, tho field for the Dunedin Guineas will probably ba reduced to four \ runners, viz., Wishful, Battle Eve, Redshire, and Snub. Tho iirst-named may divide favouritism with Snub, but if M'Flinn can succeed in keeping the firstnamed from hanging out he may account. 1 for Warstep's stablo companion. H. Cutts expects Battlo Eve to do-a lot better than | ho did at Wanffinui, and the Chokebore trainer is most insistent that the Welcome'. Stakes winner did not exhibit his best j form when he ran a poor second to Nones., The opening day of the Caulfield Cu]j Meeting is to-morrow, when amongst tli b events to lie decided are the Caulfiel d. Stakes, weight-l'or-age, ono mile and a. quarter,' and the Toorak Handicap, orie mile. Tho rain which fell at Hastings jester-, day will soften tho course, and there! contribute to the chances of success ol: Birkline, who is engaged in the big ham--dicap. At Napier last week the Gisborno gelding finished very fast in fourth plricp ir. the Park Stakes Handicap.
