TO KILL THE FLAX-GRUB
INVESTIGATION BY THE GOVERN- . . MENT. A question asked by Mr. W. H. Field (Otaki) of the Minister of Agriculture sonie days ago was whether the Government have yet discovered any effective method of checking the ravages of tho flax-grub, which is threatening our hemp industry; and, if so, what the remedy is, and whether it may be given the' utmost, publicity, so that flaxgrowers may lose no, time in taking steps to check the .evil; before it assumes more serious proportions. - ■ Hie Hod! W. D. S. MacDonakl (Minister of Agriculture) "replied yesterday that, the only suggestions that can be advanced at present are (1) the flooding (where- practicable) of the fields during April and October to drown, the insects while pupating,; and (2) exhaustive rese?reh': to discover natural enemies that wouldi-coiitrol tlie pest; The question of the Government's undertaking such research will bo considered if . the plior-mium-millers .will indicate to what extent they-are prepared to provide the cost..;. .
