CONSCRIPTION.
Sir, —With your permission, I would like to heave a disrespectful brick at certain dnti-militarists.' The trump argument of these gentlemen is that' conscription is un-Bntisli. Now, if the Britisher were bullet-proof, there might be something in their contention, but unfortunately a; bullet in a is no respecter of and does a lot of harm 'to the_ Britisher if he happens to be in its lino of flight. If this were not so, then conscription would not only be im-British, but it would be unnecessary. The truth is that conscription is not a matter- of national sentiment or racial temperament. It is a matter of geography. If Britain were part of Europe proper instead of being some islo off the coast of Europe, she would have had compulsory tiaining similar to the other States. The herring pond and the Navy have stood between and conscription, but in the present disturbance it 1 was military-trained Belgium and France that saved ■ unprepared Britain from being booked for a placo in the cemetery of Empires.—l aim, etc., FRANK BELL.
