FREYBERG. ■ It is fifteen years siuco the Now Zealand Swimming Association have award- > fid anyone thatinstituiion's; "Legion; of, ' 'Heroism; Certificate,'"' but' this. award has been made to Major Bernard C. ,'Freyberg, who made a gallant name for. .himself in the ■Dardanelles,? in recon- ■ lioitring tho enemy's position by swim-, : ming. some' miles in the dark, and was. ■ finally picked up .by a patrol. boat, after /being about an hour and a half in tho ■!water, -'and ■ having accomplished his dar,ing mission./ The beautifully-illumin-ated parclimont,. which is the patent of 'the "Legion of 'Heroism," simply records 'the fact that: on April 25—the 'date of the first landing of the New Zea■'land ■ forces on Gallipoli—ho "by the •jirt of swimming and personal risk performed an a6t of conspicuous bravery." ' The certificate'. is signed by Mr. Fredk.. 'H. Bowler,' president, and' Philip N. ; Rundle, secretary. The association has yet to decide whether- the . certificate shall be forwarded to Major Freyberg or to his parent's, who resido in New Zealand.
