KUROPATKIN ENTERS THE ARENA
! FAMOUS RUSSIAN GENERAL j . GIVEN AN APPOINTMENT. By Telegraph—Press AESoclation—Oonyriellt (■'Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) : London, October 4. The Tsar has agreed to General Kuropatkin's appointment to the Army, after: his repeated applications for the piivilege of shedding his blood for his country. [General Alexei Nikolaievich Kuropatkin (born 1848) entered the army in 1864. He earned a great reputation as Chief of Staff in tho war against Turkey in 1877-78, and subsequently-wrote a detailed and critical history, which is still tho classical work on the opeiatiou in that war. In 1882,1 ie was.appointed General, being then only 34, and was regarded as tho natural successor of the Commandor-in-Clnof. Ho acquired in time the reputation of being" one of the foremost soldiers in Europe, and in 1904-5 had charge of the Russian armies in the war with Japan. The war was marked by a series of defeats. His apologists attribute this astonishing result to his having Seen subjected to the' superior command of the Viceroy, Admiral Alcxoieff; but in his own history of tho war ho admitted his mistakes, and paid a high tribute to his armies. Aftor the battle of Mukden'he resigned the chief command to General Linievich, and himself' took the command of Linievich's army. Critics. have described him as'a man of great intelligence, but insufficient determination to carry out his plans with the fixity of purpose . ivhirit wakes aucue&i.J
