SOLDIERS' CHEER
• FUND FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS. At a jneeting of the Patriotic Society last evening it was decided that a Christmas Cheer Fund for the soldiers at the front should-be initiated.
The idea is for a shilling fund.' The amount to- be aimed at is £20,000 (if a national fund) or £5000 (if a provincial fund). The society will only collect the money, and the admin'stration will be in the hands of the Governor, the Minister of Defence, and othors. Tho appeal, it was felt, 'should bo set afoot at once, and thejast day (a Saturday) could be called'"Gallipoli Day," and be jnad'e a day of spccial appeal. Such was the suggestion of a subcommittee which had gone into tho question, and the Mayor is calling a public meeting for Thursday night to have the proposition considered.
Members of the Patriotic Society asked last evening what of the men at Samoa and those in training here, and it was answered that thoy too would share in the Christmas chee-.
