Tripp presided at tho meeting. " Mr. O. M. Luke expressed the,opinion i that the society : could not administer - !.. tho funds, and that,, a. i>ublic. meeting of donors: • should be hold'for; the purpose of appointing trustees. He moved i ..accordingly,.. and:remarked..that: -'there v'y were! cases'arising now, .which, needed the , attention of a, body empowered to spend funds. '» !■ ■ . Mr. R. Hall seconded tho motion. Mr.. Tripp said that what Mr. Luke ' -had.suggested.was correct, and that it \ agreed-with the, opinion of Mr. O. P- ■ -Skerrett, ! E.O. The society was only, a collecting'.body;;not a body-for the distribution '-*tribution of the funds in hand.; rHe, had ■ thought of a sche-ne whereby' anyone giving ss.- could become a member of a donors' society, and . anyone, giving £5 ■ a life member.- At the public meeting i - representative public men could he ap-1 pointed as trustees of tho' fundß tho ■ Patriotic Society, had gathered. He -was sure some people were hanging back with their money until th-ay saw who was going - to control - the ,fund., -There had '< .been - some littlo' delay, but they had been hoping that a-national scheme ■ would! come into being. The scheme he ' (Mr:- Tripp) had just mentioned .could be'made part of a national fund. Mr. ' Skerrett 6till hoped, to got the national ■ i scheme adopted, and would shortly visit Christchurch and Dunedin with; that obMr. Luke's motion wa6 carried,; and ' the Mayor will -be asked to call a. public - meeting at an early date., . .
