'A FINANCIAL STATEMENT,
Messrs. W. B. Lees, W. Bridson, T. Ballinger, W. J. Thompson, J. G. HarkI nesrf, C. Jones, and-' James M'Lellan were present at a meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, held yesterday. . The secretary (Mr. H. D. Vickery) stated that the statement of finance showed a credit of £20 os. 4d., and there were outstanding, subscriptions to the amount of £120. The secretary mentioned several accounts that needed to, be met, and cheques drawn after last meeting which had not been issued." The ohairman mentioned that the Cham r her wanted the sum of £133 7s. 6d., and
all they had in hand in cash was £20 Os. 4d., so that it looked as though, they would, have to get an overdraft. Mr. 0.-.Jones: How much have we on fixed deposit? The secretary: £800.
Mr. Jones: Well, I would suggest that a sub-committee be set up to go into tho financial position and make recommendations. Perhaps it would be better to go into the matter in committee at the end' of tho pceting. This waß agreed to. * '•
Tlie following resolutions forwarded from the Conference of Chambers of Commerce was approved:—"That this conference affirms the, . necessity for closer settlement in New Zealand,- and recommends to individual Chambers that tliey should assist in movements having for their object the- placing -of more people on the land, and improving tlie conditions of men on tjie land." 'In conformity with a request from the Coiifereneo of Chambers of Commerce tho following. British Trade Protection Committee was setup: The president, vice-president, Messrs. F. W. Manton'and James M'Lellan;
Letters were received l ■ from Dr. Miura and Y. Nishida, ■ members of the Japanese Trade' Commission," recently in New Zealand, thanking the Wellington Chamber for the courtesies and hospitality which had been extended to them here. ■ . . '
