MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. W. G. Biddell, S.M., - presided at tho sittings of. the Magistrate's Court oh Saturday morning, when' something like twenty police cases were dealt with, the majority involving charges of drunkenness only. Albert Harding Porter, medical practitioner, of Auckland, was remanded to appear at- Auckland to-day on a charge of attempting, to leave New Zealand without completing the arrangements for his wife's maintenance. Chief-De-tective Boddam stated that the accused had been arrested in Wellington on Friday evening. - Mr. T. S. Weston, in applying for bail for the accused, remarked that the charge was merely the result of a dispute as to settlement of property. Bail was fixed at fJIOO and one surety of £100. Patrick Byan, against whom there were several previous convictions, was sentenced to two . months' imprisonment on charges of theft' of £1, and of an. overcoat. , •
~ For-tunatus Evelyn Wright was remanded until. Wednesday next on two charges of indecent assault. _ Annie Brady pleaded guilty to 'a charge of , drunkenness, and: a further chargo of being- ( an idle and disorderly person. She was convicted and| ordered to corao up for sentence when called upon. . The following wore penalised for insobriety:—William Whiteside, 20s;; John M'Vicar, 10s.; Thomas Nicholson, 10s.; William' M'Kay, 10s.; John Wicbstotie, 10s.; and several first offenders. Default of the tines was fixed at varying terms of imprisonment from 24 hours up to 3 days.
