NOTES AND COMMENTS

By winning the First Hurdles at Handwick. Diavolo quickly repaid; his new owner for the 500 guineas paid for him last month. The Hastings gelding was well handicapped with lOst. 81b., and the New Zealanders present at'. Randwick would probably send him out well supported. ' New Zealand horses showed up well on the opening day at Randwick when Diavolo won the Hurdles, Reputation deadheated with St. Carwynne in the Spring Stakes, at weight-for-age, over one mile and a half, and FootbalL was runner-up to the imported horse William the Silent, in the' Trial Stakes. Tho meeting will be continued to-day, when the Metropolitan Handicap will be run. The Spring Stakes dead-heaters are to' meet again, but this time our representative, Reputation, has all the worst of it, as he is set to concede St. Carwynne slb„ which gives the latter an advantage of 101b. on Saturday's weights. The result of tho Epsom Handicap, won by Moorak; will be a good one for the public, as Mr. L. K. S. Mackinnon's flying chestnut has been a great favourite ever since the appearance of the weights. In fact, he was the first horse supported and barring a ehotrt drift after his defeat in the Chelmsford Stakes, he has been at a short price all the time. K. Broken, who rode the Traquair colt, has 'been associated with most of his victories, and was up when the colt established an Australian record in the Craven Plate. The same horseman won the Epsom Handicap on Alconner two years ago. '■It comes as a surprise _to find None's name missing .from the list of accentors for the Dunedin Guineas, as the Martian filly looked to have a mortgage over tho race. R. J. Mason is_ not taking any of his team to tho meeting. A notable absentee from the Auckland Racing Club's' Summer meeting entries is Reputation, who is evidently to' remain in Australia for the Now Year's racing. On the other . hand Di Gama has been nominated and it. is understood is likely to be sent to the Dominion at the conclusion of the Melbourne Cup Meeting.
