NEW STEAMER, IN POET.' The' Hu-ddart-Parkcr Company's "new 6teamer Eebburn arrived on hor initial visit to' this port on Saturday morning. She is at present under charter to Jlr. G. H. Scales, and has brought a cargo of hardwood across from Bunbury. The Hcbburn is a fine type of cargocarrier, and was the object of much interest to shipping <pcople on Saturday and yesterday. The vessel is quite different in apijsarance from any other collier, that has visited this port, and carries four masts and an unusually large number of derricks, whioh conduce to Tapid handling of cargo. She lias well deckß, is;fitted with, six large hatches, and carries thirteen winches, and two friction winches, and her carrying capacty is 6250 tons. Built by the Blytli Shipbuilding Company, of Newcastle, the Hebburn was completed in April last, her measurements being 375 ft.' over all, breadth • 51ft., and moulded depth 27.5 ft. while'her gross tonnage is 3889 tons, and net 2413 tone. Her engines were supplied by the well-known firm of Richardson, Westgarth, and Oo„ of Sunderland. . MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mir, Barber has gone across to Sydney as octinj-third officer of the Manuka. Captain H. J. Williams, who has been engaged in the 6tradts pilat service at Penang, has returned to Wellngton after an absence of fifteen years, The A. and A. Line's chaptered steamer Karema, bound from New York, -left Auck-land-for Wellington at 4.15 p.m. on Saturday. She is due hero late to-night or early to-morrow morning. ■/- The Dorset arrived at Picton from Wanganui yesterday. 1 She will be dispatched from Wellington for London. It is reported that the steamers Star of Australia and Mimiro have been delayed in Australia-. The former is coming to New Zealand from London, and the latter to take in frozen meat for Home. . For some considerable time there has been difficulty in securing deck officers for British ships. Lately it has also. been found no easy thing to obtain engineers, especially juniors. Frequently vessels Eail short of a junior. That is to say, steamers -usually carrying four engineers' have to be content with three. It J6, of course, . due to the number of certificated men drawn into the Navy or the Eoyal Naval' Reserve, and also, probably, to the demand for such skilled labour on shore. The 0. and D. liner Port Albany left Port .Chalmers for Newcastle on Saturday, and the.Matatua left Timaru tho same day for Nipier to continue Homeward loading. On account of having been delayed at Waitara tho Clan Mactavish. will not arrive at Wellington to pick up her frozen meat, till to-morrow. Departure will be taken for London, via Australia-, on Wedaesday. The weather at Greymouth did not show any signs o! improving on Saturday. From Tokoma-ru Bay the Hurunui goes to Gishome, Napier, and Wellington in the order named. , She will leave here finally for London, . via Australia and South Africa. The Monowai has 223 tons of cargo. to land here to-day before sho leavas for northern ports. Provided sufficient inducement offers the Union Company will send the Karu to NaDieir from Wellington to-morrow. The Ulimaroa is due from Sydney direct this morning, nad will borth at the Queen's Wharf. Sho has 88 saloon and 111 steerago passengers on board, ■as well as 981 tons of cargo, included .in which are 1900 cases The Rimutaka will load at Lyttelton today. and will sail from Wellington for. London on October 12, via Monte Video.
