EXPORT OF MEAT
NO CONGESTION THIS YEAR, 'A statement concerning the export-.of: /frozen meat was made by tho Primo Minister 'yesterday. :;: "Tho increased accommodation which has been provided at freezing works all over the-- country," said Mr. Massey, "will 'mate it- .impossible for congestion such as wo experienced last year to occur during - tho coming season. We shall have- storage for not: less than a million extra carcasses of meat this year, and unless something occurs .to disturb the; arrangement we have with the Imporial Government.-it is t'he business of. Imperial Government to keep up » good supply of ships. l am hoping that Nothing will happen; to "disturb the arrangement; which has worked very' smoothly indeed. We have bought nearly five million pounds' worth of meat now.. . and we have still nearly a million-carcasses in stored. There, will not be a great deal of this; left in . the stores/: by. the end of this > month, but by that'time some of the freezing works in tho North Island will be coni; mencmg operations again." 'In reply: to a .question, Mr. Massey said it was not correct to assume that; the heavy export of meat'was causing dopietion ofiour stacks.. "The number of sheep in . the country is greater-than ii was - this tinfo last year," lie said. "One cause :that may. have operated to deplete 'oiir flocks is the drought that has affected certain districts,. especially Canterbury and North Otago. I quite expect that there may be less sheep in those two districts, but elsewhere the flocks have kept "up wonderfully."
