MISS DOROTH EA SPINNEY'S RECITAL
THE "ANTIGONE" OF SOPHOCLES. i Miss Dorothea Spinney, continued her season of recitals of Greek plays in Wellington' by giving in the Masonio Hall, Boulcott Street, last • evening, "The Antigone 11 , of Sophocles. The play was written : about r 420 years. before the birth of Christ, and tho translation used by Miss Spinney was by Thomas Dale, ot Cambridge. To some of those among the. audience : who'.have _ attended ithe whole of, t'ho recitals given.; by'., Miss Spinney : that of last night may possibly take precedence, for although there is not the poetic feeling (as Miss Spinney herself stated) that, is ? ; to be found ill Gilbert : Murray's translations the stat-eli-ness, the sonority of;.th'e lines were most compelling, • and; Miss Spinney did justice to them and to the play most nobly.; The theme' was based upon the belief of the ancient Greeks' .that repose could ..riot come to the; sold of the dead unless tho sacred rites woro held over the; body, and that it should be accorded sepulture.' ' Those.holy iduties ' rested with; the next-of-kin. 1 How Antigone defied the decree of Creon, King of ■Thebes, that whosoever.dared to perform the. rites over tho' body of her brother Polynices,; who • died in fighting against his native " land, should', die- a horrible death, and how she paid tho penalty of her" heroic saorifice - is magnificently told in. tho play. Again Miss Spinney, gave . a very tfine;' performance, her impersonations of , ! Creon, . the frenzied, tyrant, and of Antigone, lofty, calm, •and heroic, only-once fiercely rebelling ■against the destiny that enmeshed' her, being amongst; her- finest performances..
