NO.- 2 HOSPITAL SHIP
MAYOR'S APPEAL TO ; WELLINGTON DISTRICT. In connection with the £3000 required to be raised here for the equipment of the No. 2 Hospital Ship, tho. Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) said yesterdaythat the quota of the total amount he had ,been asked to raiso was not to come from Wellington City and suburbs only, but from the Wellington military area, which included that portion of New Zealand between Cook Strait and a line drawn between New Plymouth on the West Coast and Gisborne on the East. On the last' occasion people within that area had responded most loyally to the call, and he was quite sure that tlio position had only to be made clear to , those residing beyond tho area with which ho was in personal touch for the response to be just, an spontaneous' in the case, of the Marama, as it was with the Maheno. The casualty lists appearing daily in the papers were a sufficiently "good' ! guide to the absolute need, for a second Hospital Ship from New Zealand, and ho. was quite confident that tho. people withili the area outlined would rise to tlio occasion by . contributing'tho comparatively small amount needed, to pay i'or tho. district's share of ■ the equipment/expenses. • - > Mr. -Luke received a graceful' little .note from Mr. W. Bridson, manager for Messrs; Briscoe and Co., yesterday,. instructing him to divert the £50 subscribed by the firm ,to tho ma-chine-gun fund to the No. 2 Hospital Ship. Fund. Mr. Luke also desires'to acknowledge the receipt of a cheque for £25 and £2 from Mrs. J. A. Pater son towards the same fund. -
