Mr. J. B. Harcourt, president of tho Wellington Racing Club, is seriously indisposed, and was unable to bo present last night, at. the annual general meeting of . members' , In referring to his absence, the chairman (Mr. W. H. Seftcn Moorhouse) said ho was sure that all those present would be sorry to hear of Mr. Harcourt's illness, and would wish him a speedy recovery. ■Major G. A. Cowles, who has' been appointed to command the Third Battalion of the Trentham Hide -Brigado, has been a well-known figure 111 Territorial activity in Wellington for some years, and is regarded as a capable officer, and was.selected as one of the officers to proceed to Samoa with thft Expeditionary Force last year. '.-_m is a schoolmaster by profession. ; _He received his first appointment in 1889 to the Capetston School in the Nelson district, and from there went to Carterton and Mangatainoka in succession. He was then six years as assistant '.master at the To-Aro School, nearly four years at Clyde Quay, and nine months at Newtoivn. For eight years lie was on tho staff of the Normal School at Thomdon, and on June 1 last year was appointed to be master of the District High School at Carterton.- When lie left for Samoa his duties were assumed by Mf. D.M. Yates (formerly headmaster of the HUtt School, and now on the retired list), and those duties are to be reassumed_by Mr. Yates, whose action in coming forward to fill a gap in the ranks of Wellington's headmasters is to be highly commended. ; . • Lioutenaut P. J. Ewing, Pw.N.R., son of Mr. Robert Ewing, of Island Bay, is at present on duty in the Imperial service at Olna Swarbucks, Mill., Shotlands. where he is the official Censor.. In a letter .to . his. parents, dated- August 5, he says that he has. had the job for four weeks, since being transferred from the submarine patrol. Lieutenant Ewing was second, officer of the Tutanekai when elie : was Brought out from England by the late Captain Fairchild, with whom Captain J. Dawson (how Harbourmaster at. Wellington) served as first officer. Before leaving for England to join the Naval Reserve, Lieutenant Ewing was in the service of the. IJnioh Company in.'New Zealand. • lifriA. Cruickshank,. of Oiorohahg;t, has. just received a cablegram from Egypt,'stating that his 6on, Trooper lan Barton Cruickshank, who left with the Main Expeditionary Force, and was wounded or. August 8, has recovered and returned to the Dardanelles; v Messrs. A. Clinberg and M. Batchelor, members of tho Selwyn Football Club, who have joined the Expeditionary Forces, received presentations from their fellow-members at the annual smoke concert last , evening. 'The: Rev. James Henry Bredin . has been appointed an officiating ininister under the Marriage Act. The Gazette notifies that Gordon S. Fairhall has_ passed the Publio Service senior examination. >.'••• \ Messrs. L. E. Brathwaite and George Levy have been, appointed DeputyRegistrars of Births, Deaths, and Marriages at Hastings and Woodville respectively. Messrs. W. A... E. Jones and Edward Woods have been appointed officers under the Fisheries Act. 1 Messrs. W. D. Davidson and F. R. Pearson have been appointed bailiffs of the Magistrate's Courts of Dannevirko and Napier , respectively. : Mr. Alex. R. Falconer, who was Seamen's Missionary in Dunedin, died suddenly at Invercargill on Sunday, aged 72. The deceased was born in Edinburgh in 1843, and at the ase of twenty years came to New Zealand in the ship Viola. He tried tho West Coast goldfields, and .then went to Port Chalmers, where he opened a business, and also took an interest in establishing-the Sailors' Rest. When the Rest was transferred to Dunedin, he took charge. of.it. At the outbreak _of the Boer War he did good work in connection with the Soldiers' Rest at the training camps .'at Karori. In 1903 ho made a trip to the Old Country. Since his return, his health was" such, that he was compelled to ease up. Referring to his death, a Southern paper says:—"Mr. Falconer was a Christian in the highest meaning of the word. He saw his duty, and he did it thoroughly. In his work amongst sailors he not disguise his motive, and ho was ■ respected by the. men. Deceased leaves a widow and family of four sons, Mr. Robert Falconer (at the Trentham Military Hospital), Dr. Falconer (medical superintendent Dunedin Hospital), Mr. Charles S. Falconer (in Ross and Glendining's employ, Wellington), and Mr. E.'T. G. Falconer (Dunedin), and two daughters.
Like many another New Zealand body; the -New Zealand Society of Accountants has its roll of honour. So far as is at present known three members of tho. society have been killed in action at the Dardanelles, viz.: LieutenantColonel Douglas Macbean Stewart, Christclinrch; Lieutenant Graham Stuart Reid, Auckland; Private Edmund Robert Guthrie, Nevertire, Now South Wales. Other members serving ■with His Majesty's Expeditionary Forces overseas, or at present in camp, are as under: Lieutenant-Colonel D'Arcy Chaytor, Majors N. S. Falla, B. S.
