THE TURF

HOROWHENUA MEETING CUP WON BY MANIAROA. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Levin, September 30. Splendid weather profiled for. tho spring meoting of the Horowhenuu Racing Club, 'l'ho course was in good order, nnd thero was a good attendance. Tho totalisator handled tho sum of ■ <£8751. • Seratchings reduced the field in the Mnidon Handicap to teii, and tho public sorted out Pall Mall as tijji best of a poor lot. Thero was a long delay nt the barrier, but when it lifted tho favourite jumped out clear, with Lady Edith next. The latter led round (ho bend, where'tho field encountered half-a-dozen cows grazing on the tracks, and in their efforts to dodge a collision tho leaders ran off tho course. This allowed the others to get up, and in the run to the po& Pomeroy, 011 tho fence, won from Awapuni and Lady Edith, with Waitomo and Pall Mall ■next.

Combustion, with W. Bell in tho saddle, was tho best-liked, of tho half-dozen in tho Hack Handicap, six furlongs. He was lucky to win, for a good jump out saved him a lot of ground, and in tie end ho just beat Ally, with Wirokino third, and Icebcrg -next. Ally and Innoladdo led to the turn, where the field closed up, and the favourite, coming fast on the outside, just got up in time to win by a head. Before the start of the MDonald Memorial Handicap, unseated IV. Bell, but tho lattor was unhurt.. Peronilla was a hot order, and jumping out smartly she led tho whole way. Tangiwai was always in second-place,-and. Black Lupin next. . The two latter had a good Taco for second place. Medallist was fourth and Negativo last. Tho Jlanakau Trot was the best of good things for Stone Beldon, who was in chargo practically throughout. Tho grey horso had been unlucky in his previous efforts, and Wanganui people said lie could not get beaten. Byron, Princo Laddo, Tangiwai, and Negative were withdrawn from tho Cup, which was a fine race. Pavlova was a good favourite, but she was in tho realtho whole way, and finished 6eoond to last. "At tho start the favourite wns chopped out and Rene, Irnuier, Square Deal, and Haumakaka Bhowed out. Down the back Goldstreain ran up to the front division, and across the bottom Iminer foil back. Reno and Square Deal were first into the straight, but Tangihou' and. Maniaroa were moving up. The lastnamed asserted himself at the distance and won by half ft.length from Tangihou, with Imarose, who was finishing on, third, followed by Master Moutoa, Goldstream, and Rene. The last-named pulled up sore. 1

The fine runners in the Moutere Hack Handicap provided a great race, the quintet being bunched the whole way.- Ballyhar and Vladineau were locked together in front for half a mile, with the other trio in another line. Bounding the bend Squadron fell back, but the other four entered the straight together. Then Combustion and Bronk Delaval came away, and in a neck-and-neck struggle the judge was unable to separate them. After his easy win in the first Trot, Stone Beidon, who was penalised 5 seconds, was again entrusted with most support; and, as in -'he first instance, the grey horse won without being extended. The Hutt-traiued Hymen was second. The detailed results are:— MAIDEN SCURRY, <4f 45 sovs. Five fur- • longs. Weight, Bst. 71b. 4 Mr. S. Watson's eh. g. Pomeroy, by Stvowan—Pomegranate, 6yrs. (E.
