St. John Ambulance Hospital Ship WO. A. The St. John Ambulance Association, at tho request of His Excellency the Governor, has undertaken to provido equipment for sixty beds on tho Hospital Ship, and yesterday afternoon a meeting of ambulance workers was held to complete arrangements for carrying out this work. Mr. C. P. Powles presided, and explained the object of tho meeting, and Mr. J. B. Finlay, secretary, also assisted in carrying out the business of tho afternoon. Of those ladies who were present) the following, at Mr. Powles's suggestion, were added to the St. John Ambulance Committee, to form a general working committee for the Hospital Ship equipment: Mcsdames Moorhouse, Mabin, Miller, Clark, Gill, Holies ton, Barltrop, Misses Mack, Martin, and-llobiesoh, the previous cominitteoj consisting of the Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke), Mrs.--Waters, Mrs. Preston, Miss Helyer, tho Hon. J. G. W. Aitkeri, M.L.C., Mr. C. P. Powles, Mr. Troup, and Mr. H. Seed. Mrs. Waters ivas elected secretary, and Miss M. Marchant assistant-secretary. Mr. Finlay announced that contributions to the amount' of £18 had been received for the purchase of material. A small executive committee was also formed, consisting of Mesdanies Luke, Moorhouse, Rolle'ston, Barltrop, Waters (pecretary), and Miss M. Marchant (assistant secretary). Work in connection with t'he cutting out of material was started upon the conclusion of .tlio business part'of the meeting. Material will bo given out to be sewn/or else it may be sewn upon the premises. A very large number of roller-bandages will be needed, and roller-bandage winders are kept upon the premises, so anyone calling in with a few moments to sparo can, be of some service by winding these. • Tho committee will be very-glad to receive contributions for the purchase-of material, and cheques may . be made payable to the chairman, Mr. C. P. Powles, 219 Lambton Quay, or to Mr. J. B. Finlay, secretary to tho association, 84 Willis Street.

Thanks to the liberal response to its request for helpers, the ■ Hutt Waistcoat Commitee is making excellent progress, and there ; is_ now .every ( prospect of having 700 waistcoats finished by .October' 1.. Those ladies who are making waistcoats at their own homes will greatly facilitate matters by returning them to St. James's Sohoolroom as soon' as possible.
Rather a record is made by a little girl of Mangatahi, only four years and eleven months, who has knitted a scarf for a cousin who is with the Fourth Reinforcements. Her name is Betty Simmons. Another scarf was knitted by a boy of seven years of age.
Christmas Clft Fund, Christmas gifts for the soldiers—and tho nurses—should be sout in to the Town Hall not later than October 3. Cakes, fruit, and all gifts of a perishable nature should bo put in a sealed tin, and all such.packages must not exceed eight pounds in weight. All contributions, financial or otherwise, will bo gladly received by tho honorary treasurer of the Mayoress's Countess of Liverpool Fund. _ The. following dona.fcions to the Christmas Gift Fund are acknowledged:—Mrs. Prouse, £2 10s.; A. The information should be useful to those who w.ould like to do as their share a bed or more, or clso share. with friends the work of malting tho equipment for ono:—4 pillows, 6 sheets (2 x 2;yards), 4 draw-sheets (1J x 1J yards), 6 pillow slips (20 x 30), 2Jquilts (2 x 2J- yards, made of Bolton sheeting, with Turkey red border), 4 bath towels, 10 fd'ce aihd hand towels, U hot water-bottles and covers, 6 pyjamas. nightingales, 2J bed 2 nightshirts (must be flannel), i day" shirts,..4 undervests, 4 bed socks, 2 pairs slippers, 2 pairs day socks, 4 face cloths, 12 handkerchiefs, 2 flannel drawers, 2 dressing gowns, 2 flannel waistcoats, : 2 bandages. Garments, where possible, should be made of' flannel—Onion or Ceylon flannel.
Mrs. Basil Jones- (Hastings) is visiting Auckland. • Miss M. Freeman, of Greenmeadows (Hawke's Bay), leaves this ivcck for Sydney. _ Every, month a basketful of supplies is dispatched from Auckland for the No. 2 New Zealand Stationary Hospital in Egypt, where such good work is being done by Lieut. Col. W. H. Parkes and. liis capable staff. The cost, which runs into something like. £100, is met by subscriptions, which vary from 6d. a week, and the work is carried out. by a committeo /under Mrs. Parkes.
' The death took place at Masterton yesterday of Mrs. ,Sarah Percy, widow of the late Mr. Henry James Percy. ' Com-, ing to the Wairarapa; in the early days with her hiisband, the Percy went to reside on the farm at xe Ore Ore, but on the death of her husband slio removed to Masterton to liye. A lprge family, comprising five sons, Messrs. Alfred, Oswald, Joseph, Frank, and' William, and three daughters, Mrs. C. L. Spencer (Hawke's Bay), Mrs. L. E. Richards (Hawke's Bay), and Mrs. R. J. Smith (Masterton), survive her. •
Some' beautiful scenes are presented in "Neptune's Daughter," which, with, Annette Kellerman in the title role, was presented in the People's Picture Palace last evening. The- story itself is a fantasy, with reminiscences of Hans Andersen's fairy story of "The Mermaid," and it has as itsi setting the Bermuda. Islands, with' wonderful sea-swept cav-' erns, forest glades, coral reefs, and great' stretches of the Atlantic. The swimming feats of Annette Kellerman as Neptune's daughter are,' it goes withqut. saying, ■ wonderful, and judging from the film she must; be. a beautiful woman as well as rbeing perfectly;formed—half dryad' of the woods, l\a}f water •nymph. • :
