THE MOUNTAIN WAR

AUSTRIAN FORTIFICATIONS CRUMPLED UP MARVELLOUS EXPLOITS BY v ALPINI Br Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.). London ( September 26. The "Times" correspondent says that in the Carnia front, the Italian troops are now ' dominating the great" hijglv road through Plezzo to Tarivs, by way of the Predil Pass. Plezzo has been gripped fast since Italy ocoupied Slonfc ttombon. The Predil Pass fortifications crumpled under the Italian big guns, once more proving that fortresses are helpr ; less against modern heavy guns. The j Austrians seemed to have abandoned the fortress, and have shown great skill in disposing of guns among the mountains, but are being slowly pushed back under relentless pressure. The eyes of the Austrian artillery have been plucked t out by the Alpinj, to whom nothing is inaccessible. They climb precipitous peaks and drop from the rocks with bayonet knife, taking trenches without firing a shot. What cannot these troops do, who treat the mountains like wild goats? The Italian engineers are wonderful. They have driven roads up, round, and through mountains. They have zigzagged the face of cliffs and blasted their waj through great masses• o£ rock. ,
