THE TURF
RACING AT WANGANUI
SPRING MEETING CONCLUDED* (By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) Wanganui, September 25. The Wangauui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting: concluded to-day in perfect weather. There was a very largo attendance. The totalisator handled .£23,773, as against i£21,915 on the second day of last year, making a total for the meeting of as against .JM0,918 for tlie meeting last year, an increase of ,-85086. Some very unexpected results occurred in tho open events, and backers generally had a losiDg day. When Banksia fell in. the Higgio Handicap she appeared to roll on top of Deeley, but to the general relief the latter got off without a scratch. It was the sound leg the Achilles maro fractured, and evidently in saving the tender one she put too much strain on the other. (She was destroyed;) Tho victories of Bonny .Helen Expect were not anticipated by their connections. The Higgio Handicap was run at a muddling pace, and this materially assisted the top weight to score. 1 In tho Owen Handicap, Nones, who promised to start a red hot favourite, tvas withdrawn, and backers then made Alia Cam their first choice. The Bomform mare ran a good race, and was unlucky to get shut in at tho home turn, but she had no chance of defeating the light weight, Master Achilles, who won very decisively. Taringamuitu again Tan a good race, and got second place from the favourite. G-lenroy jumped .out'nrst, but he was soon displaced by Tree 1/u----cerne, "who-led a bunched field .round the bend, where Master Achilles shot out, and was a winner from the bottom oi the straight. • ■ . , • Coropot, Spain, and Depredation were evenly backed, in the Kajlway Hack Handicap, witli Moufcoa Queen also strongly supported. Coropet and tneJjordell filly jumped- out smartly, and lea down the back stretch, but on the bend Moutoa Queen forged ahead. Depredation, who was running in tho rear at this point, took charge in the striaght, after a great run, and lie won* handsomely. Tho winner stripped a. much better norse to-day, and the gallop on Thursday evidently did him a lot of goodagain, shaped badly, and never looked like a winner. , , . Backers were again astray in their calculations in the Brunswick Hurdles. The Porirua, representative, Aratiatia, was a good favourite, but he broko in the race, and had to be pulled up. Parewanui .took charge early, and, boautifnlly, he was not headed. St. faatewas running next to him th® whole way, H finished second, while fttoro who is improving, vas the next to finish. The Sp weight, Royal Arms, was rcver P The™ totalisator indicated,-Torero and My Renown for the Steeplechase, and they finished in that order. Agatha Green, was out in front till three fimongs from home, where she fell. larero then went on and won easily. . Maniaroa, a place-getter- in the big handicap on the, opening day was always favourite >for the Spruis ■ ll[ !s < ' cap, with Lady Louisa, who was makin o hor first appearance, next m P"*" 10 fa "our. Thi light-weight, Xantlios, led to the bottom tend, where the momentarily took chaise, but; theni Bon:ny Helen put in her claim, and alter a BhoTt struggle alio gained the supremacy and won £y half a length, Willi Lady Louisa in third place. ' well fancied by his connecho is, bit he shaped badly and may have done better in a fast-run race. , Tho victory of Bonny Helen directed attention to the ■ Pordell fepresentativo in the Moutoa Hack event, and Ararat finished up favourite in a good bettin race. Melodist, a auiet paddock tin, led Hikakaheke down tho back, but entering the straight he hung out aml.Wolcomo Nuceot, who was always prominent, got through on tho rails and scored by three lengths. Bronk Delaval was s poot third. The winner runs a " er a ta Sunbird, who carries the., same colours as Bonny -Helen, was- a few tickets better favourite than Peroneal for the Marangai Handicap. The latter off to the front, but at the half mile Sunbird went out and cut her down. In the straight Expect came on. the scene and won nicely, while Prince Laddo got up in time to gain second money. Seadbwn and Deviation carried the bulk of the investments m the Hack Welter. Prom a perfect-start the held raced together for a furlong, when Sedd-ul-Bahr took charge and Seadown w In second place. This pair cleared oflt from tho field, and in an exciting finish tlio Trentham geldin? won by a head. Jlarcanis, who seemed to finish well, was 111 third place. , Details of the results are as follow.— .OWEN HANDICAP, of 200 soys. Six fnrlongs. 7 Mr. P. Rossmead's b.g. THE OTAKI MEETING.
Those who intend being present at Otaki to-day should note that excursion fares will be available on tho trains leaving Thorndon station at 7.45 a.m., and 8.45 a.m. Big fields are engaged in all tho events, and with tho weather promising fair there is sure to be a largo attendance.
Proceedings will commence with tho Maiden Plate, five furlongs, which has drawn an entry of twenty-three. Pall Stall and Papaiura, both good beginners, should be prominent at tho finish. Montana, a winner at. Dannovirke, i 9 top weight in tho Dominion Day Hack Handicap, ono mile, and ho is likely to oncounter most opposition from tho two Trentham trained mares, Plunder and Miraculous,
Sam Pan, Naupata,- and Master Strowan are tho three best known of those engaged' in tho Hack Steeples. The country at Otaki is not difficult and Sam Pan was a prominent winner in tho Grand National Hurdles.
Square Deal lias been -rehandicapped for the Teone Makitonore Memorial Handicap, and his weight is now Sst. Gib. Despite the fact that he is No. 1 on tho card he will probably ero out favourjte. The ovent is nothing like a good thinp for. him, and in a fast-run race ono of the light weights may defeat llim. Hushabyo and Happiness will carry most money in the Stewards' Hack. Tho former, who will lie racing on her 'own ground, is reported to havo done very well since 6ho was taken up again, and her owner ig confident.
Pavlova, Chapwana, and Goldstream are at the top of thp handicap in the Opon Flying, and the last-named may be the best of the trio, though he has not had a raco""for a considerable time.
