ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
CORONER'S INQUESTS. Three inquests were held at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S,M. The first was in connection with the death of Samuel Sloan, a singlo mail 33 years of age, whose body was found on Mount Victoria near the ICilbirnie tunnel on Thursday last. Deceased, who was a bootmaker by occupation, resided at 203 Cuba Street, and was last seen alive ou Wednesday evening. The evidence called by the police representative (Sergeant O'Halloran) showed that a -revolver had been found clutched in tlio right hand of the deceased. The indications wero that- death was due to a bullet-woi'ud jself-iuflicted, and the Coroner returned a verdict accordingly. • ; / '„ The circumstances surrounding tlie death of Leslio James Taylor formed the subject of the second inquest. Sergeant Kelly, who represented . the police, called evidence to show that deceased was twelve years of age, and was admitted '■<*> a private hospital oil Thursday to undergo ail operation for the removal of-adenoids. Dr. ]?. W. Mackenzie had charge of the operation, the anaesthetic being administered by Dr. L. A. Line. The patient died under the anaesthetic from heart failure. The Coroner's verdict was to this effect, a rider being added' that every precaution had been taken beforehand, and that everything possible liad been done for the boy after his pulse failed. In connection with the sudden death of ISlia-s G. Gaudin in Mr. Brittain's shop in Manners Street ou Thursday night, Dr. P. F. M'Evedy testified that the cause thereof was heart failure, due to fatty degeneration, and a serotio condition of .the liver. The Coroner's verdict' was in accordance with this cvidenco.
- UNKNOWN BODY FOUND. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, September 26. A body in an advanced stago 'of decomposition was found buried in. the sand on t'ho beach, at Gurakinui, ten miles from Dunodin, on 'Saturday afterneon. There was no evidence as to tlie identity, of the remains, but they are surmised by the police to be those of a man named Alfred Arthur Austin," a well-known cricketer, who, disappeared in May, 1914, and'hate not been heard of sinco. . ' DEATH FROM SUFFOCATION. Pahiatua, September 25. Eobort David Monk, aged' eighteen years, a strapping young .fellow, employed by Mr. 6. H. Cornelius, farmer, Mangatao, was found dead in a whare this morning. He was .lying with his faco in the fireplace. He appeared to ,be all right when last seen last niglit, but liad complained lately of giddiness. There- was no sign of a struggle. The indications are ..that Monk bad been repairing an acetylene bicycle lamp..Ho is believed to have relatives at Ashhurst.
Pahiatua, September 26.. At the inquest to-day on the body of David Robert Monk, a farm hand wlio was found dead in a whare at Mangakao, a'-verdict of. death from suffocation, as the result of . a, fit, was returned. The doctor stated that all ; the organs were sound and healthy.
.LAUNCH FATALITY. /' Auckland, September 26. A married man named Thomas Howarth foil-overboard from a launch in the harbour yesterday, and was drowned. An attempt to rescue him failed.
. SUICIDE IN 'AUCKLAND. ' Auckland, September 25. Thomas Owens, a single mail,.a native of Tasmania, and a labourer by occupation, . committed suicide by taking poison at Grove's boardinghouse, Kaw'liia. He wroto on a looking-glass with shaving soap: "Good-bye. Suffered from insomnia." ■ • . DEATH, OF A GIRL'. Dunedin, September 25. At the adjourned inquest regarding the death of Edna Lenore Allmond.' daugliter of Constable Allmond, of Caversham, tlio verdict was death from shock, following injuries caused by being accidentally knocked down by an electric tramcar, no blame being attributable'to tlie motormaii.
