SUBURBS V. WELLINGTON CLUBThe matchi between the combined Suburbs and tho Wellington, Club, was commenced. on Saturday evening in t'he large dining-room of the . Y.M.C.A. Bunding, which was kindly , lent for the occasion. At 8 p.m. Mr. A. G. Fell, tho club's president, briefly addressed the fifty players present, and extended, a cordial welcome to the visitors, expressing the hope that they would have an enjoyable, evening. ' The twenty'two games • disposed of on Saturday evening yielded 1L .wins to each side. There was some fine* play, and none of the games were one-sided. There are thus 26 games outstanding which liave fo be' accounted for within the' ensuing .four - weeks'.. t At-Bpaifl'-l, (Suburbs) scored a neat win froni IVIr. W.' E. Mason, the 'later'-for- once over-; looking a "mate in three." -The game, .at- Board 2 was not-completed, but _as ■Mr.--.W-. Mackayi has.._won a-bishop for a pawn from Mr. Still, it looks as if (his game will put the Suburbs team in the lead. At Board 3, Mr. Toplis, a former Tasnianian champion, proved too good for Dr. Delatour. Mr. Toplis has .taken part in a number of interState matches -ill Australia, and has an ;uhbcaten.record. , Mr. G. P. Anderson, formerly champion of the Bristol Chess Olub, won from Mr. Fell (president, arid Mr. John ;Rigg scored from Mr.; S. Gyles. The last-named is ,_ playing strongly this year—as witness his "mate In six" when playing for Wellington against Canterbury in May last—but Mr. Rigg was not to be denied, and demonstrated that although' ho has played very little during the last few years,- ho has lost none of his old-time skill. Several' of tho' outstanding games are scheduled for this week, and further good play should bo witnessed) _ The two - teams appear, to be exceedingly well matched, and the general feeling is that the ultimate margin in favour of the winning side will be a'very small one.. ■ o. '' ■ The- returnchess match ' between South Wairarapa and Masterton takes .placo at Masterton on Thursday evening' next. . . . ' ? ■ •'
