MAGISTRATE'S COURT

CIVIL CASES Considerable' argument of! a technical' nature was heard in a civil dispute which came before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, H. CI. Anderson and Co., engineers, claiming from Halforil and Company, electrical engineers,. of Gisborne, the sum of .£53 lis. 7d. This' amount wao made up of ,£lO 16s. Jd. for adjusting an electric motor; . ill IBs. 6d.' due on a promissory note, drawn' by defendants in favour of plainthe- note having been dishonoured on presentment for payment on due date, and the sum of 12s. Sid. as interest. Mr. T. i'oung appeared for plaintiffs awl Mr. T. Neave for defendants. The defence set up .was to the effect that the motor supplied hy Anderson and Co. would not do the work it was represented to do, and when complaint was made plaintiffs agreed to supply another motor and did not do so.

POLICE CASES. (Before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M.) Edmund Hill was remanded to September 30 on a chaTge of disobeying a maintenance order. Bail was allowed in .£SO. Stanley Mathias and Thos. Mallet were each ordered to pay I7s. Gd., the'cost of curative treatment on charges of helpless drunkennass. Mary Barclay was sent to gaol for six months on a charge of being a rogue and a< vagabond. For drunkenness William Dennehy and Robert Matthews were each fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment. Several first offenders were dealt with;.
