WANGANUI SPRING MEETING
NONES WINS THE GUINEAS SPRING HANDICAP WON BY SO.UARE DEAL. By Telograph.—Press Association. ■ Wanganui, September 23. The Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting opened to-day in glorious weather, and before, a very largo attendance. The totalisator handled .022,231, as against .£19,053 on the first day last year, an increase of .£3178. Bimeter was at a very short price in the Flying Handicap, in which he showed up well, but want of a race beat him, and after catching Mia Cava a few strides off tho post with a beautifully timed "run the Fordell mare -finished on the better and won by a head. Glenroy and Mia Cara nuulo the early running from Bimeter and Lady Middle ton, but enterinj the .straight-Mia Cara was two clear lengths away. Bimeter then singled him self out, but Hie result was as stated above. Taringamutu, '•■ who was very badly placed, finished third. Then caine Lady Middletou, Glenroy, Tangihou, and Tree Lucerne, with Zion last:
After the success of Mia Cara it was not. surprising to find her stable . companion, Moutoa Queen, the fancy in the Maiden Eace, and she performed well, though she had to go under to Seadown, a gelding of great size, but extremely active,' and the possessor of galloping ability. Black Ada .and Moutoa Queen wore in front of Seadown to tho turn, where the Trentham horse ran up on the outside and won nicely. He is owned by a popular steward of tho Wellington Racing Club, and on present appearances is goin % to bo a good one. Marsenah, who put in a good late run, and got third place, is also owned ill Wellington. Sedd-el-Bahr, the Highden candidate, was fourth, and then came Black Ada and Miola. Harlequin ran disappointingly, and does not look like being anything of the 5 same , class as Counterfeit, his fullsikter. A . AH the acceptors went out for the Guineas. Kones stripped well and. so did Marco Bello and Hydrus, but tho otlier trio were above themselves. Mason s filly was a good favourite, and drawing No, 2 she began smartly, and was in front the whole way. At the six-furlongs Flying Spur and Hydrus were next to her, but the Fielding horse soon dropped out of it, and eventually finished last. Hydrus was in second, till the stand .was readied, when Battle Eve and Marco Bello put in runs. The last-named looked like getting second, but Battle Evo finished on well and beat him, and Hydrus also stayed on better. The winner pulled up well, and. was not in the least distressed. . . The Open Hurdles was the best jumping event seen, on the course for many years. Styrax was a good favourite, witli iloyul Arms nest in demand, and the others evenly backed. Aratiatia, led a bunched field till tho last, fence, where tho'whole half-dozen rose within a coup-le of lengths of each other and a great struggle took place. Royal Arms, who had got up on the • fence, won by a length from Styrax,"who was a head to the good of Aratiatia. Euatangata , and Artiafce were right up.. The winner Was lucky, as Aratiatia liung out at the last fence and took the rest of the field w:ith liim, allowing Eoyal Arms to get up on the. fence'and'thus save several lengths. Calais Avas withdrawn from tho Hack Hurdles, leaving six runners. Parewamu was a good favourite, wibhi the others, excepting Indrabarali, evenly backed. Bpworth made play for a mile, when he faded out of it, and St. Gate and Parcwanui took charge, .with Patronymic handy. St. Gate shook off Parewanui, but at the last'fence. Patronymic joined him. The Wanganui horse jumped the better of the two, and i this, won Jiim the race.- Pnrewanui w,as beaten off. Then came Epworth, Glenorohy, and Indrabavah in that order. .
The'locally-owned Spain, n winner ai Daiiuevirke, was the public choice in the Hack.-'frying Handicap, but, she got a very bad nm and could only struggle in a poor third. Bivouac began smartly, and led Coropct for five furlongs, wlien the latter took charge and won very easily. Bivouac tired .to nothing,- but struggled in second, while the favourite only headed Master Achilles in the last stride. The last-named stripped much above himself, and will be a lot better for the race. Depredation was next, and Bradamante followed. ■
AH" the contestants, of the big Handicap y;ero well backed.. Baiiksia went - out wearing a bandage on her damaged leg, and Fortify was wearing a jaded appearance. Square Deal, and Peroneal Doth stripped weli, the former a bit on the pretty side, but the latter as she has not looked for a long time. The Achilles mare was soon out in front with a break. Square Deal did not budge till well down the running. . Tho last-named then came on and won easily.' Maniaroa. Iras a leugth. behind Peroneal, and then came I'ortify, Prince Laddo, Sunbird, and Banksia in that order. Baiiksia was in the rear the wihole way. and Fortify only started to move up vjhen the race was practically, over. He drew No. 1 to-day, but could not begin with the field, and was soon tailing m the roar with" Banksia. After the race lie was very lame, and will not be a runner again, for some time. .
Welcome. Nugget and Bronk Delaval divided the honours in the concluding event, but the pair- ran badly, and never looked like winning. Deviation, one of Mr. ,W. E. Bidwill's breed, was early in. command, and won nicely from an out-sider-in Hikahe. Fore was third, a head in front of Cordon and Welcome Nugget.
