Stratton is secretary of both -clubs. ;• Acceptances i for the ;HorowJienua" meeting close on Thursday evening. The acceptances received for the Otaki meeting are highly satisfactory, and if the;.weather is -fine on llonday next, a veryfjlargo crowd may-be expected' to' patronise the excursion trains. . ■ ' .' Tho -spring meeting of the Wanganui Jockey (Jlub, which opens to-morrow, promises to be a successful fixture. Ji. J. Mason intends to rely solely on Nones in the Guineas,'-while the absence of. Eligible and Loyal Arch is difficult'to account 1 for. The Maiden Race is the biggest field, thirteen hoTses 1 being' accepted for.' There are twelve in the Flying Handicap,. and ten in the Durie Hack, eight furlongs and a half. Jockey H. Lowe .went south last night to ride Multoe, and the members of Jos. Lewis's team, in their Geraldine engage- 1 ments on Thursday and Friday. Lewis i? the trainer of Gunrest, one of Mr. J. C. N. Grigg's horses, who oreated a-very favourable impression when he raced at Asbburton. 'Iho New Zealander Colonel Soult will compete at tho Hawkesbury. meeting on Saturday.. H. Burgess, owner and trainer of Hap Dba and Multoe, has engaged the. pair at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting neit'month. .The trainer named intends settling at Wingatui. ' Mowbray,' the New Zealand-bred son of Menschikoff and Lady Melton, changed hands in Sydney recently at 85 guineas : Owing to the inability of A. J. MTlinn to mako the trip,- the Trentham horse-

man, H. Thompson, will go to Band, wick to rido Tim Doolan in his steeplechase engagements Sir Geo Clifford's colt, Battle Eve, has been paid up for in both tho Spring Handicap and Guineas at Wanganui to-mor-row, but he is likely to be seen out in the weight-for-age event. Tim Doolan has already arrived at Randwick, and he is to compete at Caulfield and Flcmington at Cup time before returning' home. His owner, Mr. G. L. .Stead, will leave by the Moeraki , on Thursday to see his horse race. J. W. Scott is leaving for ~ Otaki on Saturday with Sinapis, La Deari, Eongn-a, Sirj Saracen,, and Maltegarde. Warstep is still putting up fast gallops at Riccarton. On Saturday last sho reeled off ten furlongs in a tick under 2m in. lOsec. Snub and Chrysotis went with her, and the former finished with her, which suggests that either ho has improved out of all knowledge, or else the mare was not seen at lier best, and the fast time could be accounted for by the state of the track. Though the Plying Handicap at Wanganui has drawn an acceptance of a dozen there are several horses in it that will be making their first appearance, and will probably be in want of a race. Despite this, the two present fancies are Bimeter and Taringamutu, both of whom have not raced for many months. ,

If a suitable rider can be obtainedVor Square Deal, the good-looking Advance horse should bo able to give •:>. splendid account of himself in the Spring Handicap at Wanganui. In tho Railway Handicap at Marton,. after being the last to leave the mark, ho was finishing faster thin anything in the race, and weighed l in for fourth place. ■ Last year five favourites won on the first day of the Wanganui Spring Meeting, and on appearances it looks'as if there will be some very strong machine favourites to-morrow. ' • ■ • First forfeits for the Hastings Stakes and Hawke's Bay Guineas must bo mado to-night. • Friday is nomination day for the Masterton Racing Club's Spring Meeting. Secretary A. Hathaway will take' entries up till 10 p.m. •'
