OUR SECOND HOSPITAL SHIP
The decision of the Government to provide another hospital ship for war purposes is one which should commend it-self to everyone. New Zealand's first hospital ship, the Maheno, has already done splendid work, but there is arnplo scope for the activities of another vessel of the same type, and the Marama-.is just the sort of steamer that is required. It is proposed to equip the second ship m the same wav as th« fii'fct. His Excellency the Clov<
crnor has taken this matter in | hand, and his apppal for the assistance of the' general public is suro to meet with a ready and enthusiastic response. Tho articles which the people of New Zealand aro askco to supply were mentioned in detail in yesterday's issue of The Dominion. The generous manner in which the public have answered tho many calls made upon them for patriotic purposes since the beginning of the war indicates a widespread recognition of tho duty of service. All that was requisite for the complete fitting-out of tho Maheno was quickly forthcoming, and we havo nr. doubt that the Marama will be equipped just as promptly and just as well. The men and women of New Zealand will not turn a deaf ear to any reasonable appeal, for assistance in providing what is considered necessary for tho well-being of tliF bravo men who are fighting for us in Gallipoli. Wo are all anxious that everything possible shall be dono to relievo the sufferings of the sick and the wounded, and to give them tho best chance of a thorough and speedy recovery. Tk* number of New Zealanders at tho front is being increased from timn to time by the dispatch of reinforcements, and it is quite plain that additional hospital transports anc! .'hospital aocommodation must Ibe required. In a matter of such viif.l importance there must be no failure on our part. The country is prepared to do its duty. Wo who stay at homo roalisc thai any sacrifice-:; wo may be called upon to make become insignificant'whcn compared with the sacrifices of those who are daily risking life and limb in the firing:lines. It is gratifying to know that the Maheno is fulfilling her purpose so satisfactorily, and wo are quite confident that the Mara ma will cam- out her useful mission with equal success.
