ATTITUDE OF CLERGYMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, September 21. Between seventy and eighty clorgynien attended a meeting at tho Anglican JJiocosan office this morning, con-y?-no - , Clergy Association and •Ministers' Association of Auckland, to consider the attitude of the Church generally towards tho forthcoming viipen Carnival" in relation to the Holding of art unions and raffles as an integral part of the Carnival. A manifesto prepared by a comniittco was adopted after discussion. Tho manifesto sot forth that while clergymen had tho deepest sympathy with the objects of the Carnival Committee, conscientious conviction mado- it impossible for them to give any countenance to, or assistance in, carrying out of tho Carnival while its programme was characterised by gambling. It was felt that the people of Auckland T! 1 , 100 werc be botter reached by, and that a, better response would come, m » direct appeal on the highest grounds to- patriotism, and loyaltv and generosity, whilst to havo a Carnival 01' gambling would only pander to tno undesirable elements in our community life. In the ovent of the gambling proposals being abandoned, tlie clergymen of Auckland would enthusias-t'call-V unite to further the interests ot the fund and to secure, as far as they wero able, the sum required.
