SCOTCH CONCERT
A successful patriotic concert in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund was given in the Concert Chamber last night,"under the auspices of the Scottish Society of Wellington anfl. the Wellington Pipe Band. The programme was.a thoroughly enjoy-, able one, tlie outstanding item being a lectnre on Robert Burns,, by Sir.. James Craigie, M.P., which was particularly fine, and showed the lecturer to possess a great insight into the lifo and works of the great Scottish poet. Tho lecture was listened to with evident interest, and was frequently punctuated with applause. The remainder of the. programme consisted of musical and elocutionary numbers and dances, all with a Scottish flavouring. Tlio Wellington Pipe Band gave a march, "Strathspey and Reel," Madame Stark sang "There Was a Lad Was Born in Kyle," Madame Anderson 6ang "Caller Herrin," and was associated with Mr. Stark in a duet "Ye Banks and Braes," Mr. T. Newtoil render&l a Scotch ballad "Mary Morrison," while Miss BoutelJ gave a musical monologue. Miss Betty Purdonl's recital, "Blleu M'Jones, Aberdeen," was very enjoyable, while Master Winston M'Carthy scored in his humorous item "I Love a Lassie," and was enthusiastically encored. Mr. Hornsby, M.P., was given a great reception for his recital "Burns's Advice to a Young Friend." A number of juveniles danced the Highland fling and the Scotch reel. Miss E. Bartley, was the' accompaniste, Pipe-Major J. . Simpson piper, : aml Mr. J. M'Lellan stage director.
