"Representatives la-st by •; tho Hon.: J. Allen (Defence Minister). ."'Mr.;,Allen said that the country had already been informed of tho good work ' i done by the hospital ship Maheno. He " had : heard-of 'her lifting 2200 wounded men from the beaches in eight days, and since that ;ime slio had been engaged' between these beaches and the hospitals doing equally good work. This work , was of so much value that the Government had offered the Imperial authorities another hospital ship, and tho offer had been accepted, ''Ajjitiji the'Marama had been '-tihgaged. he;-fitted [upland ready to . sail about the. first • week in December. Iho arrangements made would! be • similar to those that obtained in the ■Jssc of the Maieno v . a'hajjotsoifflent
would bear the cost of hire, and charter, ajid fitting; up,' and also of tlio bedsteads. His Excellency tlio Governor would do very much what he had dono in the case of the Maheno, that was to say, ho would attend to the equipment of tlio Marama out of tlio moneys available. Ho was pleased to bo ablo to announce that the Government had been ablo to obtain such an excellent ship, and it-was hoped that we should keop up tho record established by tlio Maheno, which was at least ono of tho' best hospital ships engaged in this very important work. Tho Defence Minister stated after the Houso rose that tho Marama had space for SOS cots, whereas tho Maheno has 354. Ho said that ho thought it possible that the Marama would reliove tlio' Maheno, which would perhaps como back to New Zealand to re-condition. It was : possible that tho Maheno would go to England to' bring back tlio Now Zealand men so seriously wounded that tlioy required more comfort than could bo provided on a transport. If this should be the plan adopted, wo should' see the Maheno back hero before tho end of the year. Mr. Allen said that
the Marama, like , tho Maheno, would bo used as .tlio authorities required, and not necessarily for New Zealanders alone. . .
