(The Guineas will bo the principal event on the opening day.' The Ascot Thousand will bo run to-day. The New Zealand-owned Margarita is amongst the acceptors. The victory of Glissando in tho Avondale Guineas suggests that tho three-year-olds in Auckland are a very poor lot tl.is year. The Gluten filly had a. win in a hack race at both the Marton and Rongi-. tilcei Hunt Club meetings, but could not fill a place at either gathering. Now that ho has been sharpened up by a couple of races—a valuable tonie for a young stallion in tho spring—Eligible is entitled to consideration when the Wanganui Guineas field is being summed up. Loyal Arch will also be benefited by the outing- she had on the opening day at Avoudale. Tho pair mentioned shoultl enoouuter most opposition from Nones and Battle Ene. It looks as if tho latter is to carry Sir Geo. Clifford's colours, as he was tried over a milo last week, and in company with Snapdragon put up a. good gallop. As the Wellington racing public has rot been able to enjoy a race meoing for sune considerable time, it is expected that a very large crowd will assemble .'.t Otaki on Monday and Tuesday next. Secretary D'Ath has arranged for two special trains, in addition, to tho ordinary service. .

At Wanganui on Friday Bimeter alone ran 5 furlongs in lmin. 2sec. Xanthos and Nones ran a mile together, the last six furlongs taking lmin. lGsec. Tho filly won easily. Mr. "Wiri Tokena," owner of Rinaldo, was in Wellington last week. Ho informed the writer that liis horse would not fulfil his engagement in tho Spring Handicap at tho Wanganui meeting. The success.of .Wallace Isinglass inilie Rosehill Guineas will strengthen tho idea that he will win the A.J.C. Derby. Bon duly won the Joffro Handicap, five furlongs, at tho Otago Hunt Club meeting. The good price paid by the Boniforin gelding was a pleasant surprise for his supporters.
