NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Or.ENCoK.I

Nominations for the Napier Park Meeting close at 8 o'clock to-nig'ht. Tho Avondalo Meeting will be concluded to-morrow, when tho Guineas will bo decided. Neither Loyal Arch nor Eligible aro engaged in the Avondale Guineas, but tho pair will probably meet again at Wanganui in tho woight-for-age evont there. On their form in the Plying Handicap at Avondale, the Ancklander looks to hold Sir. W. G. Stead's colt safe at Wanganui. On Wednesday morning at Wanganui Nones, Xanthos, and tho English horse Marcavis wero given a five-furlongs gallop from a barrier start. They finished in tho order named, with tho Guineas fancy having an advantage of two lengths. l)eeley will ride tho filly in the Wanganui classic, and probably Emerson will bo up on Xanthos. Colonel Soult was down' to compoto at the Monangle Park Meeting yesterday, but as tho cablegrams make no mention of it he was probably left in his box. His trainer, F. J. MacManemin,, leaves Auckland by the Makmra on Monday, and will remain at Randwick until tho conclusion of the big spring fixture. B. Deeley, who rode Castalia to victory in the Avondale Cup, was successful in the same event 011 Putty in 1905, and he also won the Auckland Cup on the same horse. Deeley .was to ha.o ridden Monojack in Wednesday's race, but that horse went wrong, and as J. Buchanan could not get down to do tho weight on Castalia Deelcy's services were requisitioned. Should Blackall bo successful in the New. Zealand Cup, and of this there are many sanguine people, he will bo the third of the progeny of La Nottc to gain distinction in this event. The two previous ones were Noctuiform and Mid-' night Suii.

. Local trainers are now making arrangements for taking their teams to the Wanganui, Otaki, Levin.and Napier Meetings, which) follow in close order during the next couple of weeks. H. Telford will leave on Tuesday next' with Seadoner, who is engaged in tho Maiden Race at Wanganui. On the following &itur<ky J. Lowe will take a quartet 01 the Messrs. Riddifords' team to Otaki. They are .Chakwana, Miraculous, Happiness and Trickery. At the conclusion of this meeting Lowo will return home and then go to Napier with the two-year-old full-bro-ther to.Nones, who is to race in tho Nursery Handicap, and 'will remain for the Hastings Stakes the following week.

Sequinette has foaled a filly to Birkcn.hcad at the Waikanae Stud. During tho week J. Lowo sold his brood mare Effort, who has a yearling foal to Boniform, and is also in i'oal to the same sire. He also quitted to the same buyer his two-year-old filly by Bezonian from Effort. This youngster, who has a reputation as a galloper, is now a member of J. AyerVteam. Effort and three of the Messrs. Riddifords' mares have'been booked to visit Autumnus this season. Mr. R, W. Clancy, whose death is reported from Sydney, was a well-known business man in Randwick, and he also had large interests in Newcastle. Ho owned many-horses and'specialised in jumpers. Pakau,. Porest Prince, and Matchlock carriod his colours successfully in jumping events.

Handicaps for the Otaki,' Horowhenua and Wanganui Meetings are duo . There seems to be an impression locally that Fortify,, who has -won at the last five meetings lie has attended, will continue in the 6ame vein at Wanganui next month. The Hawera horse is so thoroughly seasoned and he won so decisively at- Marton that it; will occasion no surprise if ho again scores at Wanganui, for he is meeting a lot of horses that will require a race. Acceptances for the Wanganui Meeting close on Monday. Mr. Tlios. Cameron has been appointed starter to- the Wairarapa Racing Club. A Sydney paper says: "After an ab, sence of nine years in Europe, L. H. Hewitt returned to Sydney on Thursday,, little altered in appearance, but richer in racing lore, gathered in England, France, Austria, and Germany, where ho has followed his profession with success during his absence; but the war, which stopped racing in Austria, and curtailed it jn England, has driven him back to his native country. He will' a;»>!y for a license to ride at tho spring meeting." Hpwit.t once liad a retainer of ,£3OOO to ride for an Austrian Prince, and he also rode in Germany as a free lance. One of tho most noted brood mares in the Old Country died a few weeks ago, This was Colonel Hail Walker's Go On, the dam of Polar Star. A few years ago Go On was sold for 400 guineas, but a year <sr two later was bought back by Colonel Walker for 700 guineas. It is stated that when a would-be buyer of Cherimoya. asked the late Mr. -Broderick Cloete to put a price on that mare prior to tho war, 12,000gns. was asked. That may have been more than her value, but as it is said Mr. Cloete could havegot 10,000gns. for her, the fact of Cherimoya with her foal only realising 2300gns. at auction a few weeks ago gives a fair idea of the sluiun in thoroughbred values iii England.

The English, Derby entrants of 1917 include one youngster by a Derby winner out of an Oaks winner. This is a colt by Sunstar from Our Lassie. Although repeated efforts have been made to win the English Derby with horses bred in this fashion, the attempt has not yet been successful.
