The ' "Daily 'Chroniclo's" Rome correspondent states tliat the Italians in tho Pioveai Cadore sector had encircled a strategic mountain on all but its northern side, where the enemy's entrenchments' were backed by a wall of ■precipitous rock, which the Austrians deemed to be secure. To effect a surprise, several hundred Italian volunteers lowered themselves by ropes, and at dawn discovered that tlie trenches were empty, the former occupants being at d distance, erecting a bridge across a chasm to facilitate the arrival of supplies. The Italians remained quiescent in -tho trenches, and the unsuspecting- Austrians, on returning, were met by a withering volley, the whole column being exterminated. ITALIAN REPORTS. (Rec. September 15, 10.20 p.m.) - Rome, September 15. An. Italian official communique states: "The Austrians attempted a resolute attack in the Plezzo basin, using asphyxiating gases and inflammable liquids at Danagilcz. "The enemy bombarded the Carso positions, but their guns were silenced."
