A CAREER FOR OUR LADS

We havo received from the Superintendent of the. Telegraph Office a leaflet setting forth the advantages offered by the Post and Telegraph Department to the lads of -the Dominion who clect a career in that branoh of the Public Service. These are briefly summarised as follows: —1. Permanent employment for all. satisfactory boys. 2. Higher educational training. 3. Prospects of pro-' motion. 4. Prospects of pension. 5. Annual leave. 6., Sick leave. 7. Physical training. 8. Institutes. 9. Uniform. Candidates must be over fourteen and under sixteen years of ago,. preference being given to thoso who have gained Standard VI proficiency pass, and are assured of a, permanent career in the Department provided they give _ satisfaction and can satisfy the Public Service Commissioner as to their physical and educational fitness for retention. The wages commence at £31 per anum and rise to £40 after twelve months' service. Eight days' annual leavo on full pay is allowed after the same period of service. Every lad is eligible for promotion to a higher position in the service and the Department provides to enable lads to pass the examinations required for promotion. To this end correspondence classes and a telegraph learners' school have been established. Uniforms are supplied free to each mes-sage-boy as considered necessary. All telegraph' message hovs are enrolled in the New- Zealand Military Forces as Senior Cadets, and have to take part in the regular parades of the units to which they are posted. From the date of promotion ,to a higher position message boys aro' entitled, to the benefits of the P. S. Superannuation Act, whidli provides for a peusipn after forty years'' service equal to two-thirds of annual salary.' ' .' ■ ' •
