WAR PENSIONS BOARD
TEN'APPLICATIONS CONSIDERED. The War- Pensions Board held its second, meeting yesterday, and considered ten applications for pensions, four of them mado by soldiers and ( six by dependents. The board consists of Messrs. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. (chairman), G. F. C. Campbell (Secretary to tho Treasury), and Dr. H. Pollen. Mr. G. C, Fache (Commissioner of Pensions) is secretary. ,- . . A private applying for a pension on account of partial disablement (due to sickness) was granted £1 a week pend•ing a further report f-rom the Medical Board. . . Another man suffering from partial disablement, following on sickness, wasgranted £1 a week until the end of the year, when a further report will be obtained... . .;_ One soldier claiming on account of partial disablement was requested to attend the next meeting of the .board. In, tho case of iuiother Applicant, totally disabled, it was decided that the board had no power, under the Act, to grant a pension as the incapacity of tho applicant was' due to causes'which had nothing to do with his service. The widow of . a sergeant killed on May 19 was granted £70 a year; the maximum pension for a sergeant's widow without children.
Ari ■ application by the mother of a trooper was refused, as she was deemed to be.in possession of sufficient means.' The 1 wife of a sailor killed in February was granted, on her. own behalf and that of one child under 14, a pension of £78 per annum (30s. per week). This, pension supersedes.ones_of £12 a year under the Widows' Pensions Act. Having personal means, the wife of a soldier, killed on July 2 was granted no pension on her own account, but was granted £13 a year in. respect of each of .three children, £39 a year in all. An application was made by two old people,' tlie father and mother of a seaman killed in, February. They had received no assistance from, their son. A decision in. this case was postponed. The board's decisions are subject to 'the approval, of' the Minister of Defence. , Another batch of applications is jn hand, and henceforth the board will meet at least once a week, on Tuesdays.- As time goes on it may be necessary to meet more often. 1 ■
