Y.W.C.A. ANNUAL MEETING
A GOOD YEAR'S WORE. / The annual business meeting of the [Youaig Women's Association ; •was held in the association's rooms in i iFowld's Buildings last evening, and was : '(presided over by tho Hon. J; G-.'W. jAitkcn. M.L.C.- Associated with him upon the platform were -the president, ilirs. Pearson, and vice-president, Mrs. at' Clay. - ' I The report '.yhich was pre-'onted at jthe meeting stated inter alia-, that very [successful work Jiad been accomplished Muring' tho. year in '.all. the. various 'branches of the issociation. 'he membership is 750. The association keeps ■an touch witli town and country members, and the Hostel -and Annexe have been full to" overflowing. The sirivals from oversea have decreased owing to the war, but the number «f pennan'ent girls is thirty-nine, and a constant stream of those passing from p.'aco to iplace finds accommodation for a ior ■" College-Housa Awexo was opened , this year, wh'ero there aie I twenty-seven ■ permanent inmates and (a, large number of passing visitors. jThe lunch and rest rooms are well patronised- and the work in tho .city lias so much -increased that an extra room jhas been, taken, and is of great use ifor board meetings and other purposes. (There has been: an; increa'so in 'class during the year,, especially, in the St. Jcflm Ambulance, -both .for first.aid and. home nursing. , Social evenings and 'Sunday teas -have been very successful also. ' - Much work »/has been done for the Empire: .Clothing Isent to the British and-Belgian Relief . (Fund, £85 sent .to the 'Y.M.C.A.. for ; their work in camp; and a knitting clnb iformed which has done.: a : great deal of [work, as well as individual service by members. . The association has receivjed a bequest of -£500- from tho estate of of tho lafceMrs. S. A. ..Rhodes, and also £100 from • the i trustees - of. the ■ Macarthy -Estate,' and the association, owes much ofcits success to the generosity of its subscribers; --Tho different activities of the - association in educational, social,. religious,, and other matters presented: excellent, reports. Miss Coneys had. volunteered for war service abroad, and was now working among - the soldiers'in France- There had been an increase- in the . sustaining membership this year, and also in the number of annual subscribers, which materiallyhelped in the expansion of the work. In speaking of the report and bal-ance-sheet, w-hich showed a credit balance of £238. the chairman heartily con-- ; gratulated •' the board and the association upon their excelleiit;'record, excellent iu spite'of the war,' the loss of /.their president Mrs. Webster, who had , 'lef:- to live in Melbourne, their chairman of finance, their house secretary, aud also their general secretary Miss Biich. "It spoke volumes for ihcif president, Mrs. .Pearson, their board',. - ana their - various" workers that the, as- • sociation had had so successful a.,vent's work as the one. just finished. . Mrs. M'Clay, in moving the' adoption of the report and balance-sheet-, referred to the work for tho soldiers
which had been so zealously carried out j by- the members; ' of . ..the ' association. ■ 'Not only had'they-knitted'and sewed . and worked in other'directions for the soldiers, but the/association had g'.vcn ■ .two of its membersfor,t'active work among the wounded," Miss Coneys, who ;was working in France, and Miss,.Tom I Wilijon,. who was leaving for England | within a few days. ' • Mis.. Low seconded the adoption •of the report and b'alancc-sheet. Reports of the various circles were also presented by their heads, including that of the hot-el by Mrs. Pearson. ,{. Of the . retiring members, all were re-elected , save; Mrs. Webster, i . win is-now in Melbourne, , sud Mrj. i .Whyte, Fho has left for England. In v : their place were , elected Mrs. George \ atri Mrs. Hobyl The personnel of the, board, as regard the eleven remaining in? members remains unchanged. Mrs. ' J son continues as president.
