MAGISTRATE'S COURT

CRUELTY TO A HORSE Cruelly ill-treating a horso was alleged arainst Pah'ick Daly, a carter, in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper. S.M. Mr. C. W. Triiighnm appeare<l for defendant. Jaines Henry, S.F.C.A. Inspector, said that 011 August 28 he saw the horse, which was suffering from paralysis of the hind quarters, caused by exposure. As the animal was past treatment lie got am order from a ,T.P. and destroyed it. Defendant in his evidence said that lie had fed the horse that day, and had brought a cover for the animal, but when ho saw it was ■ in a bad way he sent for Constable M'Kelv-ie. The Magistrate said that under the circumstances, and in consideration of th© fact that the defendant had lost his horse, lie would convict and order him to pay 435. costs only.

OTHER CASES. • Jolm Doyle was fined ,£5, in default one month's imprisonment, on a cshargo of assaulting Peter Hanson. The Magistrate remarked that as the assault was an entirely unprovoked one, half of the fine would go to Hanson, while accused would be ordered to pay medical expenses incurred. . A seaman .off the Tahiti, Matthew Hayes, was -fined 55., in' default 24 hours imprisonment, for drunkenness, and 20s. or three days for indecency. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared on. accused's behalf. May Baker was convicted and discharged for drunkenness aud sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment on a charge of bein<j an incorrigible rogue. Isidore Jacobus was fined .£1 with cosb 75., in default three dajrs' gaol, on each of two charges of breaking nis prohibition order. William Armstrong Kerr and James Dudley Register, who had both succeeded in getting drunk and locked up twico since Saturday, were eaclil fined 55., in default 24 hours' imprisonment on the first offence and 10s. or 48 hours on_ tho second. Eight first offending inebriates were dealt with. Andrew Julius Einlay isas further reir.anded to Wednesday on three serious charges.

MISCELLANEOUS CASES. , An adjournment for a week was granted in a case in which Annie Rudd was charged on the information of Thomas Henry Prioe, (1) with posting letters to the Commissioner of Polioe with grossly offensive words thereon; (2) sending similar letters lo tho Superintendent of Police; (3) sending similar letters to the Minista' of Justice. Application was made by Ernest Alfred Schultz for the variation of a maintenance order against him. The order was reduced to 12s. 6d. per week and. the arrears to £40. . Wm. Jamieson was charged with disobeying a maintenance order in respect to his children. Defendant made application for a variation of the order, Mr. P. W. Jackson appearing in support of the application. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate reduced tho order from ,16s. to 12s. per week and remitted the ail-rears, ,£42 Bs.
