PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Thero were present at last evening's meeting of the Petone Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors Forsyth, List, Cox, Brocklebank, M'Dougall, •M'Kenzie, .Jones,. Trueman, and Anderson. Tlio secretary of the Agricultural Department notified that goats', rue had been gazetted a noxious ivecd. " A ratepayer offered for sale a strip of land for the purpose of widening Islington Street, at £6 per-foot, and it was decided to open negotiations in this respect, similar to those entered into with another party. The Town Clerk, Wellington, pointed out, with respect to the Petone Bridge, that, tho grade of tho approaches was ono in thirty, but tho proposal to lay strips of wood across could not be enters tained, as certain drivers would probably complain. It was resolved to point out that strips, of just sufficient width to enable horses to obtain a grip on the bridge were what was required.; Tho Prime Minister acknowledged receipt of letter from tho council inquiring if the Government is prepared to sell the Wilford Settlement, and stated tliat a.definite answer will be forwarded later.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, referring to Section 4 of the Hutt Kiver Board Amendment Act, advised that a similar provision was inserted in the Land Drainage Amendment Act, 1913, and it was considered desirable that it should also be made in the River Boards Act. .The Under-Secretary' of the Department of Internal Affairs stated that as the law now stanils the Minister has no power to grant permission to raffle any articles, other than those that come within the meaning of Section 42 of the Gaming Act, 1908. The Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department regretted that the' charge for communication from tho slot telephone at Petone could not be reduced from 6d. to 3d. ; The usual reports of the sewerage engineer'and tho borough inspector were submitted.
