NEW CITY BUILDING
FOE JOHN CHAMBERS 'AND SON, LTD., The confidence that commercial m'on of long experience have in tho futuro of Wellington, is once more instanced by the big building programme' which Messrs. John Chambers and Sou, Ltd., engineers and 'importers, liave decided upon. The firm has scoured a long lease from the Wellington Harbour Beard of a largo part of that section of reclaimed land opposite tlie promises of the Odlin Timber and Hardware Company in Cable .Street, and having a frontage to that street of 185 ft. by a frontage to Jervois Quay of 206 ft. Tho block is triangular ill shape, which determines the aspects of the new buildings, the plans for which have been prepared by Messrs. Hoggard, Prouse, and Gummer, of Wellington and Auckland.
The now building, which will be one of the largest warehouses in Wellington, will bo 0110 of three stories and a mezzanine floor, virtually a four-story building, to bo constructed of reinforced concrete and steel. As the firm trades in heavy-weight maohinery special, care is being taken with t'he foundations, which will rest oil stout hardwood piles to be-driven down into tlio solid. Reinforced concrete floors will bo supported by strong steel pillars, the construction of these being calculated to stand a stress of thrco hundredweight to the square foot. Tlio offices will bo situated on the first and mezzanine floors, and tlio rest Of the building will bo suited to the firm's requirements in respect to show and storage rooms. To _ facilitate the handling of heavy machinery three travelling cranes will bo provided on the ground floor, and two on cadi of the other floors where goods are to bo handled. One large cart-way will traverse through the building from Cable Street to Jervois Quay (to avoid any backing), and another cart dock will also bo provided on the Cable_ Street frontago. Tlio building promises to be a substantial addition to the commercial architecture of the city.
