Tho news to-day tells of a battle of considerable magnitude in Gallipoli, both the Navy and Army co-oporating, with further progress as tho result of the fighting. There are, at tho moment of writ■i'ig, details. In the Russian theatre important operations are developing on tli6 Grodno front, and in the South. The Germans, it is considered, are planning to seize the Riga-Lemberg milway line, possession of which would .simplify their transport and supply problems., The Grand Duke Nicholas has been appointed Viceroy of the Caucasus, and the Tsar has assumed control of-the Russian sea and land forces for reasons which he indicates in a personal rescript to the Grand Duke, thanking him for his distinguished services as Oommanider-in-Chiaf. The Germans in-the West have made a fresh attempt to break the French line in the Argonue, and, assisted by asphyxiating bombs succeeded in gaining the Frencli advanced trenches, but their success was 6hort-lived. Meanwhile the cannonading continues along the line. There is no news .from tho Italian theatre at the time of writing, The Trade Union Congress at Bristol has pledged itself, by resolution, to help the Government to win the war. The German Government, through Count BernstorfF, has claimed that the Hesperian was suuk by. a mine j diplomatic actiou by tlie United States is considered to be improbable.; President Wilson is now concerning himself' with the extraordinary conduct of the Austrian Ambassador in attempting .to prwent Austrian munition workers domiciled in the United States from serving in American war factories.. •• . After the above lines were in type a speoial official message from Petrograd announced a big Russian victory at Tarnopol, in Eastern Galicia, the Germans suffering enormous losses.
