ATTEMPTING TO SMUGGLE
OHAEGE 'AGAINST A PASSENGER. (By Telegraph.—Presß Association.! Auckland, September 7. William Frericks, of Gisborno, a passenger by tlie Niagara from Sydney, was charged at tho Police Court with an attempt to smuggle gold and diamond brooches, apparel, etc., of the total value of £15 19s. 10d., on which (iuty of £16 was payable. Defendant stated that he was unaware that duty had to bo paid on any of the articles. Ho had no intention to defraud the Customs. He ownbd several farms at Gisborno. and was in good circumstances. Mr. Cutfcen, S.M., said he would have to convict the defendant. He imposed a fine of £25, adding that the goods would bo forfeited.
