" ASSISTANTS' 'CONFERENCE. The tinnual conference of .the Secondary Schools Assistants' Association of New Zealand was held in Wellington yesterday. Mr. A. C. Gilford, M.A., of Wellington; presided. The'following amepdment to the constitution' was made':—"Any teacher is. eligiblo for membership who is engaged in ,n. secondary school so defined under, the Act, or in any preparatory depart-. ment attached to the same; and is eligible for .superannuation- under Hie Education Act of 1 1908, or any subsequent Act." ' The following resolutions -were passed: "Teachers' in preparatory' classes -".t----tached io ; secondary schools shall bo eligible for.!.membership of the associav ;tion, antl .alialf be entitled to share all privileges) accorded to members." "The Minister of . Education shall be again Vrged to define 'incidentals' according to his promise of last year, and'further, the Minister shall be asked to issue regulations limiting the surplus in any one year in the Salaries and Incidentals Act". "It is desirable that ' arrangements should bo mado with the New; Zealand Educational Institute and tho Secondary Schools Conference so v as to . provide lr.eiins of joint, action v when it, is considered advisable." "The association shall still urge upon the Minister the necessity of training secondary school teachers." "The executive shall approach tho Department to ask that ho secondary school inspector should be appointed who has had ho teaching experience in secondary schools." "The association reaffirms the principle of demanding the three best years, instead of tho three last years, as the basis upon which to compute the retiring pension under the Superannuation Act."
