Surgeon-General Henderson, the ncw< Iy-appointed Director of Modical Services for the New Zealand Army; arrived from London by tho Manuka from Sydney yesterday. He was' met on arrival by General Robin, Colonel Purdy, and Colonel Valintme. General Henderson was driven to Government House, where he will be the guest of His Excellency tho Governor. He will probably attend a conference to-day at which General Rubin, Colonels Purdy. and Valintine will bo present, also the Minister of Defence • (Hon. James Allen). General Henderson will afterwards begin his work of inspection of camps and hospitals' at once. ■ ■ ' . Tho Rev. C. F. Askew, vicar of St. Mark s, roturned to Wellington yesterday, from a visit to Auckland and Rotenia. Mr. Askew recently, under* wont a serious operation in Wellingtouj and for some time his condition caused serious anxiety to his friends. He liai made a most satisfactory recovery, ami lias como back to his'parish duties it greatly improved health. Colonel Gibbon, Chief of the General Staff at Defence Headquarters, has been indisposed for some little time, and is at present away from Wellington visiting the various military camys. In his absence, Major Norton Francis ia attending at the Defence Office. Major A. A. Corrigan lias taken over charge of tho Wellington Military Group, and Captain Grover has gono to Palmerston North as Chief Embarkation Officcr. Tlie Dofence authorities have received word that Dr. Barnett, formerly of the Otago University, n<jw holds' a captain's commission in the R.A.M.C.. and. is stationed at Malta, in the Intarga Hospital, vhero he is surgeon-in-chief or consulting surgeon. There are 1200 beds in the Intarga Hospital. Captain Williams, a, master at Well" irigton College, went into camp at Trentham yesterday. Mr. Alonzo P. Dwaii, of Nairn Street, received a presentation from the railway stores statf at Pctone on Saturday, on tlie eve of his departure for Trentham Camp, which he enters as a' n.c.o. in tho 9th Reinforcements. Ho was a lieutenant in the St. Vincent Cadets. Mr. Frederick Lankshear, eldest sou of Mr. W. J. Lankshear, of Wellington, is now occupying an important position in England. He was born in Wellington, and while at To Aro School lie got liis first lessons in chemistry from Mr, Clement Watson, tho late headmaster;' Subsequently lie won a scholarship,coming out top of the Wellington district, and then spent several years under Mr. J. P. Firth at tlio Wellington College, whore he won several scholar-* ships, which took him through that in-i stitution. He then went to Victoria University College,' where ho was awarded tlie Sir George Grey scholar' ship for science, and graduated B.A. He won the Senior Science scholarship for chemistry, and was subsequently lecturer under Professor Easterfield, until, on tlio recommendation of Sii Ernest Rut-lierford lie proceeded to Mandbcster, staying at Victoria University for six years, during which time ha' took the Master of Science degree. On tho outbreak cf the war lie'at onca volunteered for active service and was offered' a commission, but could not satisfy the medical examiner, having had a. serious 'illness in his childhood. This was a bitter disappointment to him, hilt ho has now accepted tho posi-' t-ion of manager and chief chemist to a big firm of chemical manufacturers (H, N\ Morris aud Co., Ltd.,. of .Openshnw,' Manchester), • who, under the control and direction of the War Office, are making materials for the high oxnlosives by processes designed by Mr. Lankshear. Tlie work there is of an important naturo, and tho premises ara guarded by twenty-five -soldiers; no one can enter or leave without an order signed by tho, manager. A cable message has been received privately' stating that,-; Staff-Sergeant Keith Little, who was reported as being confined in the New Zealand General Hospital at Cairo, is suffering from an attack of gastritis. Mr. Tom Pollard arrived from tho south yesterday morning to take in hand the production of "Les Cloches do Corneville for the Wellington Amateur Operatic Society. He attended tho rehearsal last evening. Captain Jones, who, on the release of the interned German steamer Apolda from Cape Town, brought that steamer to Melbourne, and who has beon visiting his son in Wellington, leaves for' Cape Town by the lonic next week. Mr. F. M. Corkill, M.Sc., B.E. (Canterbury College), lias gone into camp at Trentliam as a probationer non-com-missioned officer in the engineers of the Ninth Reinforcements. Tlio death is announced from Melbourne of Mr. Alex. M'Cracken for many years chairman of tho Victoria Racing Club. In his day the deceased owned many horses, and one of them, Knight of tho Garter, won the Australian Steoplechase for him. Professor J. MacMillan Brown, who has been on a scientific visit to New Caledonia, roturned to New Zealand by the Manuka yesterday. He leaves for Christchurch this evening. e Mr. aud Mrs. J. W. Recce, of Christchurch, Mr. J. Hannah and Mr. and Mrs. F. Cooper, of Wellington, returned from Sydney by the Manuka yesterday. News; was received in Wellington oil Sunday that Sergeant J. W. Maxwell, of the Sixth Manawatu Squadron, Wellington Mounted Rifles, died on August 10 as the result of wounds received at the Dardanelles. The late Sergeant Maxwoll was born in Lismore, New. South Wales, thirty-three years ago, and had beon residing in Wellington for many years, where he was very popular and made many friends. Prior to enlisting for the Third Reinforcements he was accountant for six years to Mr. W. H. Nash, of Wellington. He leaves a widow and throe- children. Mr. James Stanley Tingoy. of Feilding, was yesterday admitted by Ilis Honour tho Chief Justico (Sir Robert Stout) as a solicitor of .the Supremo Court. Mr. R. Kennedy appeared as counsel. , The death occurred last week of Mr. Ernest Frank Coo, of "The Grange," Irwell, one of the host-known residents of the Ellosniero district, Canterbury. The deceased was 58 years of age. Dr. N. A. Neeley, who has been a resident of Christchurch for about ten years, left on Saturday evening for California, where he will mako his homo. He will spend about six weeks in San Francisco before selecting ji permanent place of residence. Dr. Neeley was well known in howling circles. Lieutenant Robert Howell Deck (Canterbury Mounted), killed ill act-ion, was a son of Major Deck, commander of the 10th (Nelson) Mounted Rifles. Lieutenant Deck himself held a commission in the same regiment beforo leaving for the front with the 3rd Reinforcements. Deceased was twenty-four years of age, was born at Motuoka, and educated at Nelson College where liq played in tlie first football fifteen. _ Leaving school, lie took up fruit-farming at Motiieka. He was married to Miss Skinner, of Motuoka, just beforo leaving New Zealand for the front. Tho members of the "Fun On the Bristol" Company, that is being introduced by Mr. George Stephenson,' arrived by the Manuka from Sydney yesterday. • Thoso who remember tlio Rev. Archibald G. Brown and his great work at tho East London Tabernacle, will be glad to hear that he aud Mrs. Brown will bo arriving in Wellington by.to-day's express from Auckland. Mr. Brown, who Ims relinquished permanent pastoral work, is now on an extended tour of the i Dominion.
