PETONE TEAM'S GREAT WIN - Probably the big win th'oy liatl • over Athletic at Pcfone oil Saturday was as •great a surpriso to Petono as to anyono else. It was expected that this gamo would )>e closely contested, and . both sides expected to win by a narrow margin. Tlio gamo endctl in Petone's favour by 21 points to nil; a surprisingly big scovo to l be put up against a team which had not J previously suffered a reverse. Both sides ( lined out at full strength, and as the i gamo was a deciding factor in the chani- | much public interest was i evinced in it. The weather was beauti- 1 fully fine, the ground in good condition, ! and about. 1500 people'woro present. Petone 6et the "ball in motion, and, de- 1 spite the fact that they were handicapped I by the sun in their eyes, and a fair wind ! agaiust them, they asserted supremacy from the start, and in a few minutes 1 Athletic were compelled to force down. On ! the kick out, Petone once more como with ' a vigorous forward atack, and just lie.ir 1 the line Parker managed to sccuro the Kill ' and get across. E. Eyan failed to goal. Petone was making a better showing in every department, and the backs had that, combination that Athletic's division seemed to lack. Further, the latter's full-back, Robinson,' although quick with' his kicks, seemed to lack driving power, • sor that it i became very difficult to keep Petone out ' of enemy territory. A series of scrums i in Petone's end looked as if Athletic might i even up the score, but when Petono wero ( penalised Madden.; had ail unsuccessful ■ shot at goal, and the tension wsks relieved, i Athletic contimied tho. atack'for some time, and L. Wilson was nearly over once. Then play. was quickly' transferred, and i Anslow scored. • J. Eyan .failed, with- tho kick. The spell elided' with. Petone attacking hard. With the change round it was aritici- : pated that Petone would gain a big ad- ; vantage, but Athletic showed up much < better, and for a time more than held their own. They had lost 'Madden in the first spell, , and L. . Wilson, had to go elf in the second, both, with bad legs. These men were replaced, but towards the close " of the game Athletic played one mau short'. ' The tido turned again in Petone's direction when E. Eyan kicked on easy penalty goal. Then . the same player scored between the posts, and added a goal, and a.-minute or so later he-broke away "from a line-out, and ran threequarters of the length of the field, in a fine sprint, before rawing to' TJdy. The loiter scored; and 15. Eyan added the goal.Just on time o. good passing rush between J. Ryan ? . Bolton, and E. Canterbury, was tnlayed at Carisbrook in beautiful weather, before about 1500 people. Spectators were .treated to-a fine exhibi- ! tion of football'in the> first half, but in . the second spell'both sides visibly tirod. The Red forwards started off with a rattle, and pressed the Blues, and Hassel kicked a greait goal, from a mark, llie jßlue forwards then' began to dominate the play, and withrth'eir back:lino proving far too fast for the opposition, .the Reds Really' did not have mucli of a look in thereafter, and suffered defeat by ,30 : points to 3.. , The Canterbury backs gave a poor exhibition right' through, their half-back failing to get the ball . away. Cade, full-back, was inclined ,to get out of his place, and this resulted,' on at least one instance, in a score being registered against his side. N'Leod, Canterbury wing three-quarter, was hurt halfway through the first half, and his place was taken by Baylies. Canterbury played with the sun at their backs, and the forwards commenced to break through, from the line-outs. Booth marked in a good position, arid- Hassel goaled.- 'Piercy made a run to the Blues' 1 twenty-five, but was pulled down by Harris. Shortly after bad play lost a certain try. to Canterbury. Watson, the- Blue full-back, was getting in some fine line kicks. Fumbling by Piercy let Whitty and Harris away, and the latter scored. No goal resulted. Then Eckhold passed out -quickly to Whitty," who scored near the-posts, Eckhold goa-ling. Shortly after Harris scored his second try, Graham missing the goal kick. The Blue -forwards were running over the opposition, especially in the loose, and Douglas. broke through from the twenty-five and scored a fine try, Graham converting. In the second half the game dowed down a tot, but Canterbury again never flattered her supporters. Hassel had a. ciouple of free-kicks without result. After scrambling olay Cave missed a long ground kick, and Eckhold pioked up and passed to Wilson, , who scored near the corner. No goal. The Blues still'pressed, and Black chopped oft a pass between Watson (Canterbury) and Boag at centre. He flashed off for the -line, and gave up the chase. | Eckhold kicked a goal. Then Duncan struggled through several forwards and scored, the-goal-kick being missed. Pindlay Bbindoll dashed over at the corner, and Graham landed a fine goal, bringing the score to 30 points. The Blues' bacli and forward game was a bright display, Whitty and Black, fivMighths, being a fine combination, the three-quarter line alsc being vory sound. Canterbury's form wa< certainly not what was expected, in view of the trouncing given Otago in the previous match. MARIST BROTHERS WIN AUCKLANI CHAMPIONSHIP. Auckland, September 5. Marist Bros.'
