THE BACKBLOCKS' NURSE
' DEVOTION TO DUTY. An idea of the trials, nurses working [ in the backblocks have to undergo ma'y i be gained, from 5 a letter ..written by, Nurse Silvester, engaged in the Ka- , whia district, under the Waikato Hos- ■ pital Board,. to her parents- in, Hamili ton, and published: in an Auckland 1 exi change. i ,,- 1 : ' • ■ "I ■' have been ■ busy, lately," she Writes, "and have had no time for any- • thing but work. Last Sunday 1 was ■ called out to a confinement case at • Oparau. I journeyed out by launch, ■: and on arrival at the house found that > the boy, one of twins, required medical , attention. I' got into communication ■ with. Dr. Hall, of Te Awamutu,; over i 30 miles away.; He ordered the infant . to be conveyed to Te -Awamutu. With i. a neighbour, I started off in a sulky, i at 2 p.m., in teeming rain, which con- ; tinued throughout, the greater part of i the journey. AVe arrived at Te Rau-a ' r Moa four hours where we had > ten., and resumed our; journey': with fresh • horses,.arriving at Pirongia about' 10.30. :. Here I had to change, vehicles again, ! and, leaving'the neighbour behind, con--1 tinued my journey to Te Awamutu, ar- , riving at the.'doctor's residence; a' few b 'minutes beforo midnight. The doctor , immediately'' commenced :an; operation - on the chid, at which 1 Assisted. I looked after the baby during the night, and at 4:30 a.m. "breakfast was . pre- ) pared, and, catching the ooach, the - baby , and I set off'back. I was dread-; fully sick in the coach until we reached 3 Te Rau-a-Moa. Here we transferred to i the sulky, and wasn't I glad? After - tt dreadful. journey, over terrible roads; -. we got back to Kawhia again late in - the day. "I _had' scarcely been ill tho. - house ton minutes ,when along came a } manVivith a request : . that I should, go 1' out 1 and-see his wife,' who had\beetf ill, f all-day. So I changed my clothes, andi off again, and brought • another littlo • soldier into the world at 2.30 next ) morning., Goodness, wasn't I glad when i night: came, and; knowing the mother : was safe, I got some sleep. I rods s through from Marakopa on Tuesday, ) and. the roads—well, it is impossible ~ for one not having traversed them to ; imagine they are like. They told • me before I started that I would never ■ get through, but I did. When the husband was coming home the other night with his pack-hor'ses two of them went through the fascines. . ; They had an aw--1 fill job with them, and at. last had to ! abandon one of them. ..That is the road I have to travel ovor. Don't you envy me? -When I arrived here. I was like ■ a . block of mud." : Wo doubt if any story from tho ■trenches can surpass this for stoicism and devotion to duty.
