OLD WELLINGTON
IAS -ORIGINALLY DESIGNED, ||« ■' ! Mr. Herbert Baillie, Public-Librarian, lias recently tad framed on© of. the original plans of-the City of Wellington -. as drafted by MivFelton. Mathew, the' first Surveyor-General (brought ■ over from Sydney by Governor Ho bson) for the Now Zealand Land Company.. The plan, which was discovered by Mr. Baillie in an aiieien fc ]3ritisli Parliamentary paper, is a model of neatness, and shows with the clearest exactitude ! the wholo of tho 1100-aero sections that wero balloted for by the shareholders of tho company. Strange to say, Section No. 1 is. situated just about where the .Aro Street tram line terminates, whilst Section 1100' is beyond Duppa Street, on tho Island Bay. Road. Cuba, Street (then unnamed) only goes south as far as' Ingestrc Street, whilst the cross streets, such as Lome Street, Col-fege-Street, Frcderio and Haining. Streets, do not. exist. Dixon Street, is spelt Dickson Street on Mr. Mathew's plan, 4 and a long canal traversing Cam-, bridge Terracp is shown in water blue leading to tho "Basin"—-a lino expanse, of-pale'blue water.- The plan:is. as remarkable for. its inclusions-as well as its exclusions; Though many important thoroughfares are missing in the ljjiddle of tho City, provision is made for such vertical thoroughfares as Hay and; Grass Streets in Oriental Bay. ' No fower than eight streams run into tho i harbour between Clyde Quay and the: northern end of tile Tlionidon Esplanade. One of the most, curious features to be noted in the light of recent discussions about markets are.that threo sites are set apart for such purposes. One is on Pipitea Point (now obscured by tho reclamation work of recent; yours), another is in Jtintoul Street, and the third is in Adelaide Eoad,. at tho top of tho rise .above Stoke Street. Tho. Nairn Street: plantation (or tho entrance thereto): is marked down as a reserve for a. "Scotch Church." ;Oth'er denominations are provided for, 'but' tfcere is no provision ma.de for schools. NO COLD IS "NAZOL" PROOF! Here's good advice beyond price! For Colds, Coughs, Sore Throat, Influenza, or Bronchial Troubles, take "NAZOL" and you'll get immediate relief. • SUty- dosea jj»£ Is. s •'■■■<>
