ITS CARRIAGE ON THE RAILWAYS. ■ The following letter lias been received by • the' Wellington City Council ' from the-General Manager of' tho Railways' with reference to the carriage of men . and dogs in. vans used for the convey-, ance of inilk to tho city:— ' . :■ "With reference to your .letter of 26th ultimo,- forwardbig iMpy of Inspec?. tor Watson's report respecting the car-; riage of : milk in railway. ; vans along with, men and dogs,' I have the Honour to inform you that from inquiries made I -find that a; : covered wagon is specially, provided .bn.rSunday trains on the Manawatu line for the, conveyance of dogs-and game, and the owners of the dogs usually . rids in the same wagon. The'guard's.'van, a large/Main Trunk. van, .is reserved, for-the conveyance' of. milk, and this is usually ample for the , traffic offering, which has on occasions amounted to 180 cans. , On* the date in question, 172 cans of milk were con-' : veyed by the train : in; question, and as some .of the cans wore of a larger size | than'usual, ten_of them;had'to .be put ' in. the; covered-in van, as the guard's van could not accommodate, the lot. Tile overflow, however, was placed at the far end of the wagon away from the men and dogs. The; case in question appears to be an isolated one, as careful inquiries have failed to show that anything of the kind has previously I come under.noticei', Suitable steps havo . been taken to prevent a recurrence, and II trust, there will be no further, cause for complaint." •; .
