THE AND THE CHILDREN
. . 9 CANON. GARLAND'S ; MESSAGE. ' After a monster children's demonstra- . tion, held in the Exhibition Grounds, Brisbane, which cnlminated in the children, en masse, being siirrouuded by the soldiers in training, a- threefold, message to the men of the State was' issued by the Governor (Sir Hamilton Goold Adams), tho • Minister of Public Instruction, who is also the Recruiting Minister., (the Hon. H. F. Hardaore), and the honorary recruiting organising secretary (LieutenantColonel Chaplain the Rev. Canon Garland). Canon. Garland, who is wellknown in New Zealand in connection With the Bible-in-schools movement, gave .the following inspiring message:—"No one could ,be unmoved who to-day saw the .beautiful children of our sunny Queensland surrounded in the by those bravo men. who are offering their lives to gnard and defend tho children of Australia. The children thus encircled by our dear soldier; boys seemed to me a risible image of the reality of what our soldiers have so nobly done and are doing in- tho war. They are shedding their blood and laying down their.lives to, save our children from the 'frightfulness' wliich is part of the German declared methods of conquest. We should burn into our hearts the fact that German 'frightful'ness- includes the skewering of babies on bayonets amidst the songs -of German soldiers, the crucifying of children, the violation (with every attribute of horror) of girls of- tender years. Who will join our heroes to save our children from the barbarities inflicted upon those of Belgium and France Our gallant Australian soldiers, who are all too few to insure 'safety for Australia, are pleading for the help of every MAN in Queensland, who. is not physically or otherwise / disqualified. Is the fascination of pleasure, like the siren of ancient fable, to so charm our sense, that tho call of o.u,r comrades, and of the children's danger, shall remain nnheeded 'Will they never come' a.way froni the "races, football, and other amusements, to play the only game worth playing now—tho game of fighting to the death for the sake of the children of 'to-day? If we don't do more in the future than we have dono in tho past; we are going to be beaten.
