Lieutenant Cooper, of the Royal Engineers, while driving a mine 192 yards iong under tlie' German position, was within a few yards of his objective when lie broke into a German mine crammed witli high explosives. He quickly cut the wires leading to the German trenches, • obtained help, and removed tliO'enemy's ; explosives piecemeal. The tunnel was very low, and ho and his men lay head feet and passed ] back a ton and,a half 6f explosives, a I task which occupied twelve hours. Five . of the men were unconscious from • tlio fumes. The' men received the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and Lieutenant , Cooper was awarded tho Military Gross. J
