LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

ALLECED SHORTACE OF MARINE OFFICERS. Sir. —Kindly allow mo a. littlo space in your valualilo paper in regard- to a statement made by the Hon. Dr. M'Nab, Minister of Marine, to a deputation from the Federated Seamen's Onion, whero tlio Minister is reported to have mado special reference to the ehortago of marine officers. This statement is incorrect, as at present there are twenty certificated masters and officers out of employment in Wellington alone, and there lias not been any shortage for months. If any firm requiring the services of certificated officers had applied to the Merchant Service Guild they would have obtained all they required. In_ view of this wo fail to seo tlio necessity of amending the Shipping' Act to. the manning scale of officers.—l am, etc., MARINER.
